what's nasa's big thing ahead of it? >> nasa has three things it does. first is science. in the last two decades we revolutionized physics. every new discovery we made in space has shown we know less about the universe. that's job security so it's really great. the next decade we're going to revolutionize biology and find out where else life exists in the universe and something about how it started. second thing we do is help people on earth. nasa got the data and got the understanding that enables us to begin to deal with climate change and global warming. in addition the first a in nasa stands for arrow nonics. we need to make carbon neutral and carbon free airplanes. huge new industry. the third thing and where all of the controversy is our human space flight program. that's at a really interesting point. we're on the verge of settling the solar system. that's incredibly exciting. there's a lot of argument about how to do that. one approach was to rebuild "apollo." it turned out to be too expen expensi expensive. we have to invent a new way to do it. one of the key thi

i am at nasa's research center in mountain view.m going to give you a rare look at the high-tech flight simulator nasa uses to train their pilots and astronauts. it is called their vertical motion simulator or mdms. it is the 30th anniversary of this training center, so they let media in to have a look. it is basically a souped up video-game simulator. it is like nothing you have ever experienced at a amusement park or video arcade. nasa designed this experience to be as real as flying a shuttle or one of the many other aircrafts and vehicles they have to pilot to and from space. astronauts have to lock a lot of hours in the vms as part of their training. inside this inclosed cockpit or cab, as they call it are astronauts in training. they're being put through extreme flight exercises that require the cab to move all over the place, simulating the motion of flight. the cab sits on this giant platform that is moved up and down by huge polls and thick metal cables. look how big this room is that the cab moves around in. it is three st

nasa is a very large organization and has a lot of parts. part of your job is to help keep the organization functioning, but in addition, the primary purpose is space exploration and observation, and part of your mission is to help those missions succeed. there is what was built back in the 1960's which is called the deep space network. these are used to communicate with spacecraft that are in orbit around. it is a pretty primitive type of network. we have done amazing things with this capability. i believe that it is time to expand the functionality to be more like the internet. so we were motivated in part by missions to mars. what was interesting is the regional plan to the rovers was to transmit information director earth at 20 kilobits and when the radios were turned on, it is my understanding that the overheated, and this was a design problem because it showed up in both rovers. so the cycle had to be reduced, and the scientists were already unhappy with 28 kilobits per second, let alone a reduced cycle, so it was noticed that there wa

but that former nasa administrator sean o'keefe and his son survived, though they are badly injured. the struggle for accurate information about this crash lasted throughout much of this day because it happened in such a remote area, more than 300 miles from anchorage, near a tiny town of dillingham. we have three reports, including one near the scene. but first, tom costello on what happened. tom? >> reporter: ann, good evening. this was a passing plane that spotted the wreckage and guided first responders to this remote scene. it took more than 12 hours for national guard and coast guard rescuers to get to the wreckage and medivac out the victims. among those five fatalities on board, senator stevens. the plane went down in a remote region, 320 miles southwest of anchorage. among the five who died, former u.s. senator ted stevens, the longest serving republican in the senate. also on board, former nasa administrator and navy secretary sean o'keefe, who survived along with his son, kevin. others on board include friends and their children. >> we are experiencing a tragedy. and as ci
