i'm sure i'm really interested in this discussion because as i have been and involved in nasa nasa as have you for a long time, i knew many of these original six women. all, all. but judy and i just say right off, i have an advance copy here of the book. i really enjoyed reading this ok. i have known some of the history, but the way it's been presented, i think people will find fascinating. and i'm interested in getting some of the back story and the highlights teased out in this conversation. so i'll start right off by. just, just asking you and i could ask this a lot about a book i came out with last year. what motivated you to write this book that the timing, the what is it that you felt the message was right to now get out about about these women today? yeah. so my my kind of go to is, you know, obviously i've been reporting on space for gosh, nearly a decade now. and it's, you know, the space reporting field, it's still pretty male dominated industry. you know, as i've continue to in this profession, i've met a lot of great women journalists and they're they're absolutely fantast

we've had graduates go to nasa. naval academy is the number one support of astronauts in the country. when kayla put her name in and amid plied that year, 18,300 applicants for 12 spots, they broke a record. 18,300. we didn't know that at the time. le kayla, talk a little bit-- and io want to spend a lot mor time speaking about your experience in space, but i think this is fascinating to the american public, to this audience, how that selection process works. >> yeah, well, you apply to be an astronaut on usa jobs.gov which many of you may be familiar with. and was surprising to me when i first figured out what it does take to apply to be an astronaut andve discovered i me the minimum qualifications so i had no excuse. once you apply, putting together a resume' and references, but nasa combs these records and kind of whittles it down to a pool of highly qualified applicants they think have the technical skills and the leadership experience to have the potential to future training. and then it's really a lot of luck
