i have to say, i cover about 43 races a year between indy car and nascar and it was the worst day i've to the in feel medical center. 15 cars, 15 drivers that they were trying to get to. and 14 of them were coming in and out of the medical center. and of course, we got news late on dan wheldon's condition. we had to go to the hospital, umc here in las vegas and report on that and see his family. see them being notified. it was just, it was an awful scene here. which was supposed to be a great day, a great celebration of a champion. and of course dan wheldon had $5 million on the line. he was starting from the back and he wanted to prove he could make it all the way to the front and make the win. >> he was starting in the back and wanted to make it to the front. that was a special incentive added to this race. do you think after this tragedy, after a few days and weeks pass, and all these drivers know it's high rick. they know it is high reward. will there be an assessment of do we want to do something like this again? >> i don't know if they'll look at that so much. in all reality ever

nascars typically don't fly like this -- nothing would have happened. the top of the car and roll cage would have protected the driver. but in an open cockpit car like an indyval. i've said this a long time. most of you don't know this i used to do nascar racing for the nashville network many, many years ago. here's las vegas, here's the motor speedway on up to the north. people are saying is it too fast? were they going too fast? this is no smaller, no slower than texas motor speedway. new hampshire they go a little bit slower but still, you have to understand that nascar does drive on this track. they go 176 in qualifying. ricky rudd. that's the fastest there's ever been a nascar on this track. these cars were going 220. was it too small? it is a mile and half, but there are smaller. here's indy. you try and compare it to indy. indy has basically two big straight-aways, then you put your brakes on, you turn left, you turn left, you turn left and you do left. they don't do that. you go back to las vegas motor speedway, it is almost one continuous turn. there is a slight straight here. but by the time you make your turn here, you're still turning, you're st

the indy cars now, they inspect the cars to where they want the cars to run a bit more in in a pack like nascarg wheels with each other at 225 miles an hour. our wheels are exposed. nascar cars are closed like a street body car. once have you two cars touch each other, you don't have any control of what can happen. so we need to look at what the future is. we have a new car coming in 2012 that we will hope stops the cares from intner locking wheel. they built body around the wheels. but my concern now is, the fencing i think is the problem with motor sports. you see stock cars fly and get up in the air when they get backwards and they get into the fencing and the cars just get ripped apart. it is very much the same for indy cars. so my thoughts are, you know, and i think the cars right now are pretty safe. but i think the next thing needs to be done to the fencing. >> good point. tell us something about dan wheldon you would like to share with all of our viewers in the united states and around the world. >> dan was just a guy who loved life. i mean, i never saw dan in the ten years that i knew
