it sits on the side of interstate 65 outside nashville, tennessee.than bedford forest. he was sometimes credited being the founder of the clan. the man who sculpted this statue honest to god i kid you not was named jack kershaw who was the defense lawyer for the man who assassinated dr. martin luther king jr. i think it's fair to say when he created this he meant it exactly the way you think he meant it. the statue is on private land put up in 1998. it's surrounded by more than a dozen confederate flags, very subtle. when we last checked in on nashville and the clan statue which welcomes you to their fair city it was in the wake of the massacre at the mother emmanuel church in charleston south carolina and in the wake of that there were proposals by local officials in nashville to do something about that huge scary monument on the city's outskirts. if this thing is on private land what can be done? when we last covered this a democratic candidate for mayor of nashville a woman who sits on the city council proposed that maybe on the public land that a

i think it's fair to say he meant it the way he did it. >>> when we last checked in on nashville ande which welcomes you to their fair city it was in the wake of the massacre at the mother ame massacre. there were proposals by local officials to do something about that huge scary confederate monument on their city's ut skirts. it's on private land. what can be done? when we last covered this story, a democratic candidate for mayor proposed maybe on the public land that abutts that memorial maybe they can grow some trees or shrubs. anything tall and green that could block the view of that giant klansman from passersby on the interstate. that proposal is how we left it six days after charleston. now that council has voted to go ahead with that plan to put up some trees or greenery to try to block the view of the giant klan statue. it's still awaiting final approval at the state level. some day the marble eyed toothy klansman on the horse will no longer be the welcome to nashville signal for travelers on interstate 65. we'll see. today, though if you took i-65 south out of nashville and

nashville, tennessee, is the world-famous home of country music, but just four miles from downtown is home to this state's most violent offenders. it's a high-tech correctional facility called riverbend maximum security institution. riverbend opened in 1989 and sits on 132 acres. it replaced its 100-year-old predecessor, the tennessee state penitentiary, known as the walls. today, riverbend houses close to 700 male inmates, 480 of them are high risk offenders, classified this way because they're a threat to the security of the institution and other inmates. >> we house the worst of the worst including the male inmates, male offenders that are sentenced to death. >> ricky j. bell is warden at riverbend. he's been on the job since 1995. >> it's the state of the art operation. and very proud of what it represents for the taxpayers and the state. >> let's go! chow time! >> the prison compound consists of six different housing units. maximum security inmates live in one, three, and four. nicknamed the high side. it's here you will find riverbend's most dangerous inmates. >> the screaming n

we know that investigators are interviewing people here on the ground, especially people in nashville about two hours away from here in chattanooga where they searched his parents' home. nationals talked to people where this man worked. whether he might have had a second residence there, gun ranges also being talked to by the fbi. was he practicing anywhere? there's no trace of anything on social media, which is a place that the fbi often looks. now one of the reasons i bring up nashville is because he had taken off work and then traveled the two hours to chattanooga, was here for a visit, and that's when the shooting happened. cell phone video captures the intense gun battle between mohommad abdulazeez and chattanooga police. officials say the 24-year-old engineering graduate had a handgun and two long guns including an ak-47 rifle when police killed him thursday. he was also wearing a vest to carry extra ammunition. >> some of the weapons were purchased legally and some may not have been. we'll examine that. >> authorities are trying to figure out why abdulazeez went on the killing
