during the late 19th century, nassau had become a popular tourist resort. most visitors to the island spent their time at picturesque sites, but homer ignored the tourist life around him, concentrating instead on native activities, particularly sponge and turtle fishing. in these works, homer plays off the elements of dark-skinned fishermen, white sails, and green-blue water. working from bare, white paper to dark washes of color, he establishes vivid ranges of tonal contrasts. his brushwork is free and swift, rhythmic and expressive. certain subjects preoccupied homer for long periods. hurricanes fascinated him. he dramatically illustrated the energy of the wind in a watercolor of 1898, and then, a year later, hauntingly portrayed the wreckage of a boat and figure washed ashore. another subject that occupied him was sharks. a watercolor of shark fishing was the basis for a pictorial narrative dealing with the ambiguous relationship between man and the forces of nature. this theme culminated in the great oil painting known as the gulf stream, seen on his ea

according to the mta and "the new york times," that's nassau, suffolk, on long island and the countiesge, putnam and duchess. anything north of that is upstate. if you look at those downstate suburbs, you can see the political transition taking place with the exception of rockland county, which is solidly democratic, the rest of them are pretty evenly divided. suffolk county is almost an exact 50/50 split. despite being upstate albany, democrats outnumber republicans 2-1. more like new york city than its upstate neighbor. like the political divide there's a demographic divide between upstate and downstate. according to the study of census data, 7% african-american, 2% asian. in their study they included dutchess and orange county as upstate. 45% white, 18% african-american, 25% hispanic and 10% asian. not everyone believes the two regions can even coexist. just like a lot of big states there's a movement under way in new york to split the city and its suburbs from the rest of new york. basically another attempt for republicans to find some sort of power. they would rename these states
