this area got about 18 inches of snow in central nassau county.you combine that with the high winds and bitter cold it made driving treacherous. it was still very icyç with layers of snow and ice and the blizzard brought greater misery to the east end. the town of orient on the north fork got at least 2 1/2 feet of snow. most of suffolk county was blanketed in 17 to 24 inches of the dry drifting snow including the hamptons which prompted the governor to re-allocate 77 plows and hundreds of assets to help speed the recovery. despite the lifting of the driving ban in new york, new jersey officials were still encouraging people who were digging out their cars not to drive them. the roads were so dangerous. the governor of connecticut said there were 15 accidents during the storm. he said there would have been hundreds and hundreds if they hadn't closed the roads. greta, it is 24 degrees tonight but it feels like 10 and they say the temperature will remain below freezing for at least the next week or so. this snow and ice isn't going anywhere for a wh

i don't know if you've heard from my interview with the nassau county executive.he was saying they're particularly concerned about the coastal areas. two things happen there. you have the snow buildup. that area is already damaged since super storm sandy. it's weakened anyway. and we won't have immediate melting because it's going to be cold. but when it does melt that complicates matters because that's a lot of water if you have three feet of snow. >> we're going to be talking about cold temperatures over the next period of days. actually looking at some of the models models. we'll look at incredible cold, some of the coldest air we've seen all season moving in in the next week or so. this is not going anywhere fast. if i could, we're also looking at computer models going ahead in time the next three days looking at another event, harris. sometimes this happens. we have a trough that has dug out across the east coast. that is kind of a pathway for these storm systems. so a lot of times you will see the storm kind of follow the same path and that's what we're deal

we're focusing rockland, west chester, new york city, nassau and suffolk. we have 750 plows from across the state that are coming down. ironically, few weeks ago we had seven feet of snow in buffalo. seven feet of snow. and we had to do the reverse. we had to ask all the plows in down state new york to go up to buffalo. so now we're asking the reverse and the upstate plow operators are coming down to help. 50,000 pounds of salt, we have several hundred national guard who have been called out. and we'll be stations in new york city and long island area primarily. fee must shears we put into effect, number one, i'm declaring a state of emergency effective immediately from sullivan, ulster counties south, rockland, west chester, new york city and long island. declaration of a state of emergency allows me to waive certain laws and certain regulations. so it actually allows the government to move faster. state employees who are nonessential are released at 3:00 p.m. the new york city subway system will continue to run until 7:00 to 8:00 on the usual schedule. th

so i went to nassau community college for two years.wouldn't be here with you this morning if i wasn't in congress and i wouldn't be in congress without that community college education. i saved up to go on college loans and pay it back. i think what the president is saying community college has always been one of those tools that strengthens the middle class. it's not for everybody. but we have a new economy. we have globalization new technologies. we need to realign our community colleges as the place you can go if you're in your 40s or 50s and that thing you were making in your career people aren't buying it anymore. these need to be career re retraining centers and we need to make it affordable. >> the figure in the papers yesterday was that the college proposal could :l cost the treasury $6 billion in its first year. can this country afford that is this. >> we have to really look at those numbers and i'm open to any proposal that realigns our community colleges to make them more assessable to people on their second or third career.
