this area got about 18 inches of snow in central nassau county.you combine that with the high winds and bitter cold it made driving treacherous. it was still very icyç with layers of snow and ice and the blizzard brought greater misery to the east end. the town of orient on the north fork got at least 2 1/2 feet of snow. most of suffolk county was blanketed in 17 to 24 inches of the dry drifting snow including the hamptons which prompted the governor to re-allocate 77 plows and hundreds of assets to help speed the recovery. despite the lifting of the driving ban in new york, new jersey officials were still encouraging people who were digging out their cars not to drive them. the roads were so dangerous. the governor of connecticut said there were 15 accidents during the storm. he said there would have been hundreds and hundreds if they hadn't closed the roads. greta, it is 24 degrees tonight but it feels like 10 and they say the temperature will remain below freezing for at least the next week or so. this snow and ice isn't going anywhere for a wh

reporting live from nassau county, as the snow continues to fall overnight -- >> stacy bell look at that. the nbc station in new york city tonight. completely calm cool and collected as that happens during her stand up from long island just incredible. >>> we are now approaching 10:00. mayors and governors from d.c. to massachusetts have urged their citizens to basically shut it down get home and stay home and maybe think about staying home tomorrow too. seven governors have declared a state of emergency. in some cases authorities are urging people not to travel unless they absolutely must. there are travel bans in place already or due to go into effect shortly in new york city. 13 other counties in massachusetts and rhode island and connecticut. it's not just a request, it is a necessity. only emergency responders are being allowed out on the roads. major cities saw a huge rush as people jammed onto subways and commuter trains. new york city is going to finish closing its entire subway system an hour from now. this is the first time they've ever closed an entire subway system because of

you go 40 50 miles east into nassau county you have reports of 20 21 22 inches of snow. i'm not sure the super computer models will ever be able to refine over a small geographical area. i think we give the grand illusion because we have super computers, because we have doppler radar, we can predict down to the inch. i'm not sure that's ever going to be possible. predicting the future is fraught with peril. >> there's no doubt about that. we were talking last night about the unpredictability of these arctic clippers and how they can change in a heart beat. if i was living in boston i would think the forecasters got it correct. >> absolutely. >> it doesn't look good there at all. there's millions of inconvenienced people because of this storm, but criticism for forecasters is just part of the business, isn't it? >> yeah. you develop a thick skin. again, people if it doesn't verify in my yard the forecast is wrong. even though you say 10 20 miles down the road they got such and such, it doesn't matter. i have worked with a number of television anchor men over the years in

i don't know if you've heard from my interview with the nassau county executive.he was saying they're particularly concerned about the coastal areas. two things happen there. you have the snow buildup. that area is already damaged since super storm sandy. it's weakened anyway. and we won't have immediate melting because it's going to be cold. but when it does melt that complicates matters because that's a lot of water if you have three feet of snow. >> we're going to be talking about cold temperatures over the next period of days. actually looking at some of the models models. we'll look at incredible cold, some of the coldest air we've seen all season moving in in the next week or so. this is not going anywhere fast. if i could, we're also looking at computer models going ahead in time the next three days looking at another event, harris. sometimes this happens. we have a trough that has dug out across the east coast. that is kind of a pathway for these storm systems. so a lot of times you will see the storm kind of follow the same path and that's what we're deal

as the former district attorney of nassau county, just outside of new york city, terrorism is not abstract for me and my constituents. it's very real and it's very personal. thousands of long island residents commute to the city every single day. we all remember too clearly the september 11 attacks and we all live with the reality that such a day could come again if we are not vigilant in our efforts to prevent terrorism. the horrendous attacks in france last week serve as a tragic and chilling reminder that we must be on high alert here at home and the best way to do that is to ensure that those who protect us have the resources they need to do their jobs. that is our job, to make sure they have the resources they need to do theirs. mr. speaker, i will make one final point. a number of freshmen members, myself included, came to congress with a mandate, to find compromise and to govern. passing h.r. 185 will not demonstrate such priorities. we should be working together to actually solve problems. we should be working to find new ideas and new solutions to our nation's problems and create

nassau suffolk, new york city westchester, rock land olster the 13 county area that was affected will coordinated that with the governor of new jersey chris christie who i spoke with this morning. obviously you can't open the traffic ban on one state unless you're coordinated with the other states because you don't want people on the roads in new jersey trying to get to new york if they can't get to new york and vice versa. so we have a coordinated opening with governor chris christie at 8:00. i also spoke with governor molloy governor of connecticut. they also have a varied situation, and they're making determinations now to open parts of their roads and parts will remain closed. we're coordinating with them. the nta is in the process of bringing the trains back out, subway and rail. they will put-- they were put away yesterday, last night, in an area protected from the weather. they are now redeploying as we speak. service will begin coming online at 9:00. by noon the system should be back to sunday service. which is roughly 60% of the weekday service. the bridges and tunnels -- >>

12,000 people are brought through the doors of the city's suffolk county jail after being arrested. the intake center is at the nassaueet jail. >> this ain't wall street. this ain't bourbon street. this is national saw street. >> the new arrivals have not been convicted of the crimes for which they were arrested and considered innocent until proven guilty. >> step in. >> those who are not quickly released or bailed out will be housed at nashua until their cases are closed. and every year, thousands of men and women undergo a demanding application process to secure and manage inmates while they're in jail. less than 1% will make it to the final stage, cadet training. >> there was 40 people, 40 candidates that were brought into this academy class. there were upwards of 10,000 applications for the job. >> the cadets must pass a series of difficult tests to become suffolk county jail deputies. >> we teach them everything from combatives which is defensive tactics to firearms, to first aid, fire safety, approximately 40 different components of what they do. this morning, we're going to do some defensive tactics training.

initiative with the brooklyn district attorney's office and worked with district attorneys in nassau and suffolk county in dealing with prescription drug abuse which has spiked and led to violence and death. >> the stats lately are that four out of five of heroin users started with prescription drugs and then they turned to heroin. i think people are shocked by that. you see that connection with the heroin as well. >> we do because of the opioid. and we are seeing a resurgence in heroin not only in my district but unfortunately across the country. this problem like so many others are ones that must be dealt with in a cooperative and collaborative manner and i'm incredibly proud to say all of my united states attorneys colleagues take seriously the opportunity and the privilege to work with our state and local counterparts in crafting prescription drug initiatives heroin initiatives, along with our violent crime initiatives. we work closely with our state and local counterparts to determine where is the best place for a case to be brought? we look at things like the type of sentence that can be achieved
