this morning we had those extensive meetings and i had our nassau county team in. ring, of course, with the congressman who is also the county chair in queens. queens has about 20, to 25% of the district. so we are putting together a very robust and comprehensive campaign that is already begun and done some preliminary work. we are often running. >> what candidate qualities are necessary to flip the district? do you have a preferred candidate in mind? >> we are not ready to talk about preferred candidates, there are a lot of people interested in it. several that i think are serious candidates that merit the series consideration. but i think we are looking for someone that is going to defend and promote the suburban way of life here in nassau county and in the northeastern corner of queens which is also fairly suburban and a certain sense. and i have to say, it has to be someone who is moderate, but definitely who has a progressive lean to him or her. but we are looking for a moderate that can really articulate ideas and the vision for this district that will resonat

2022, and trump led biden in nassau county by 7. biden's approval is only 41%. democrats have an advantage in the former representative there, but this could be a rougher ride than generally assumed. >> grace, santos is still facing 23 felony charges to which he's pleaded not guilty. what's next for his court case? could he go to jail? what does it look like within the criminal justice system? >> sure, thanks so much for having me. so as you said, santos is facing 23 felonies, and up to potentially 22 years in prison. some serious charges, wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft, which has a two-year mandatory minimum. he is due in court in a couple of weeks, his trial date is set for september of 2024. that's obviously some time off. we could see a sooner resolution if he makes a deal with prosecutors. thus far he's seemed uninterested in doing that. beyond his criminal case, though, he suggested that we have not seen the last of him. he said that he wants to write a book. he has not ruled out some sort of politi

but nassau county and suffolk county, one of the few suburb anywhere in the country that have been moving toward republicans in the trump era. biden won that county by 10 points. nassau county, the heart of district. 2020. but the gubernatorial candidate won it in 2022. trump leads biden there. biden's approval is only 41%. there's a lot of concern about immigration and crime which dominate the news in the new york media market. you have the new york mayor eric adams out there making arguments that in many ways, echo the republican criticism of biden. so this terrain is more difficult than it might appear from the fact that i said biden. the advantage is the former, the person who formerly held that seat. the former nasa executive. he's much better known than the other republicans. he could win the seat if an off, off, off year election. i think this is indicative of the kanld of issues they'll have to figure out a better answer for between now and next november. it is the kind of thing that republicans who saw the desantis debate against newsom will really want to stressful. >> thanks so

it's critical for queens and nassau county th, and so, i madt clear, i'm there to help. >> and what is your reaction to santos being expelled? and i have to ask, maybe you've been asked this before, but were there any rumblings at the time that there was all this wacky stuff in his background that -- one would think, if you knew all that, you would have used that against him at that time. >> we certainly tried. >> okay. >> we certainly did. i mean, frankly, there's an enormous sense of relief to see him out of congress. not a moment of celebration, because he should have been removed much earlier, and too many republicans were basically accomplices to his crimes by protecting him and keeping him in congress. let me point out to you, when i ran, george santos has been running for congress for four years. during those four years, the local republicans never did opposition research or investigated him, though they nominated him. the person who ran before me against him never did opposition research into him, either, but won that race. and when i ran, the democratic congressional campaign

the process will be in the hands of both the nassau county democratic party and the queens county democratic party at which point it will be my expectation that they will be some conversations between those two county organizations and stakeholders all across the congressional district and within new york's congressional delegation to chart a path forward so that new york's third congressional district can elect someone who's actually interested in solving problems. interested in putting people over politics, interested in making life better for the people on long island in eastern queens as opposed to embarrassing them in embarrassing the nation. last question. and the fact that we have heard relatively little and any thoughts on that? george santos is a national embarrassment and clearly an embarrassment to new york republicans, an embarrassment to the people who stood by george santos and helped elect him like the house republican conference chair and bragged publicly about the significant amounts of money that was raised by her in new york republicans in order to elect a serial fraudster
