joined by natalie allen at cnn center. big welcome to those of you watching in the u.s. and around the world. natalie, the local officials have some big questions to answer now. the peaceful demonstrations took place over the weekend. the curfew didn't begin until an hour ago. yet hours before the curfew, the police were seen, you can see footage here, firing tear gas. they're in riot gear, and it looks like police or military hardware as they approached the demonstrators, they also fired rubber bullets. one witnessed a person hit by a rubber bullet talked to us on cnn a short time ago. right now, our correspondents are all over ferguson and reporting that the police since this scene took place have essentially cleared out this intersection and this area, which is a key location, not too far from where 18-year-old michael brown, an unarmed black teen, was shot to death more than a week ago now. local residents have been protesting that heavy handed police response. the investigation continues. there are lingering questions as to why police felt the need to use such force,

natalie? >> ron allen, thank you very much. >>> right now to iraq. u.s. special forces are visiting a mountain where thousands of refugees are facing threat from islamic fighters. this morning it appears a u.s.-led mission is not imminent. jim miklaszewski has the story. >> reporter: american troops were on the ground in a combat zone in iraq. those special forces found conditions for those yazidi refugees now better-than-expected so the b pentagon says a rescue mission is less likely. the u.s. green berets delivered an encouraging assessment. there are far fewer refugees than the tens of thousands first reported. thousands per day had already been flown or escorted out by kurdish forces. after those air drops of food and water, most were in remarkable good conditions, perhaps more importantly u.s. air strikes had driven all isis rebels from the foot of the mountain reducing the immediate threat against the yazidis. still, if some kind of rescue mission is ordered, the u.s. military stands ready. u.s. ospreys and helicopters could handle the load. if refu

allen is in ferguson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, natalie. yes. the problems here stirring up trouble. 30 arrests. last night they tried a new tactic. no curfew. the national guard here while more went to the street patrolling a designated protest area. but after dark, gunfire confrontation. so police went in to clear the streets. using vehicles, tactical units to get the streets clear as soon as possible. 30 arrests, now they're focused on trying to gather as much intelligence as possible about the protesters, about the people involved so they can single out the criminal element and get rid of it. >> ron allen in ferguson, missouri, thank you. >>> evacuation orders were issued overnight for 13,000 homes, hotels, and businesses in california because of an out of control wildfire near yosemite national park. the juncture fire has scorched in california. at one point it came close to a pair of massive propane tanks. at least eight buildings have already burned down and two firefighters have been injured. >>> a truck driver's courage saved the day af

allen is in ferguson covering the story. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, natalie.by the brown family because they don't trust the local authorities here to do a fair job. and it really brought home the horror of what happened to their own teenager when he was shot and killed by a police officer. six times, two to the head. the family wanted to try to show he was surrendering. that he has defensive wounds. a lot of people here were very upset when they heard the news of what that report showed. taking to the streets last night in big numbers. the police here say they were provoked and under attack on numerous fronts. even their command center came under attack with hundreds of protesters descending on the place, some throwing molotov cocktails. we were out in the streets. fire bombs, tear gas, looting. the situation here descending into mayhem which is while the mayor has called for the in order to step in. >> ron allen, thank you. >>> meanwhile, president obama interrupted his martha's vineyard vacation to return to the white house overnight. he's holding top-level

allen is in ferguson covering the story. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, natalie.ing a very graphic press conference at this hour releasing the results of that autopsy that they commissioned because they simply don't trust the local officials here. they say that he was shot at least six times and they focused on two wounds, one to the head and one with the bullet apparently exited one of his eyes. very graphic information which they say proves that he was shot from the back when he was in the position surrendering. a 6 foot tall man with a head wound they say indicates that he was in a defensive position leaning forward. again, all this will be disputed once the case gets to court if it gets to court. the family is determined to try to bring this evidence to the public and to prosecutors because the goal, they say, is to give the local authorities enough information to arrest the officer, at least arrest him, and perhaps charge him with murder. they are frustrated by the slow pace they say of this investigation. >> martha's vineyard vacation, returned to the white
