we're talking about natalie coughlin. she is done competing now. >> raj mathai is live in london where he talked to coughlin about the decision to bench her in the relay finals. >> reporter: this is one of the strangest stories in a long time. we dealt with a lot of star athletes in the bay area. natalie among them but to get benched at the olympics, when you're a star, that's a strange one. we're trying to wrap our head around it. not just at the bay area but swimming fans across the country. what happened over the weekend in london that led to this. so natalie coughlin as you probably know in the relay finals over the weekend was taken off in the finals, she did swim in the preliminaries but her coach, her personal coach at cal now the team usa coach, decided to as a team effort take her off of the finals and rest her. basically bench her. that means she didn't race, she didn't get to the podium. she did win bronze a's long with her team though she didn't race. that's part of the rules. the down side, it's a bittersweet
