natasha bertrand, our national security correspondent, is joining me now. natasha, this is now we are learning an operation that involves the military. there was a military aircraft involved. what else are you hearing from? from your sources about what happened here? >> yeah. abby, the. >> information right now is extremely limited. the army is trying to get more information about just what happened here. but we are told, according to two u.s. defense officials, that this was an army blackhawk that was involved in this midair collision with this passenger aircraft. and that is extremely significant because if you live in washington, d.c., you see these blackhawks flying around all the time. it is extremely common for them to be flying around, going in and out of joint base anacostia-bolling, which is just across the river. they can carry, you know, a significant amount of weight. a large number of people, relatively to other helicopters. they can carry up to 14 people. and so something really had to have gone very, very wrong here for them to be involved in

our reporter natasha turney is in leicestershire, which has that flood water is expected to rise overfew hours, and it is causing a lot of problems in the local area. we have a few houses up this way, which have been affected, and this pub behind me here, we have had the brewery team this morning in trying to salvage what they can of the brewery equipment. that's flooded for the second time, then, in two years. this water level is expected to rise with the latest flood warning, but there are 300 flood alerts out across the uk, and one severe warning. now that is just up the road from here in barrow on soar, where they have evacuated people living in a caravan park because of that expected rise in the flooding, and it could be a possible danger to life. now, we have had a number of schools closed, the roads and railways affected, and a number of airports as well. manchester and bristol airport, they were closed for a while and then re—opened, but liverpooljohn lennon, that has been closed, we are told, until 10am this morning. as the flood levels dissipate in some places, in others the

natasha, what are you seeing? what are you hearing from people there? >> wolf, it's a lot of exasperation here today. a lot of these people are coming from the altadena fire. a lot of them have lost their homes. there are 1200 people staying in this shelter right now. and hundreds more coming in just looking for resources. a lot of them wearing the clothes they had on their backs when they left their homes, or borrowing some clothes, looking for a toothbrush, looking for any idea of how they can begin the process of filing claims when their houses have burned to the ground and nothing stands there but a chimney. a lot of people asking questions for why there perhaps weren't more urgent warnings ahead of time, or more timely notices. we talked to one woman who lost her home. she's wearing her nephew's sweatshirt and sweatpants. she said she actually stayed to fight the fire that was on her property. even when all of her neighbors had evacuated. and she did that because her home is more than 100 years old, she said. it's on the national historic register.

natasha, there's so much to unpack here, but i do want to begin with that visit by giorgia meloni to to mar-a-lago, because it certainly seems as though a lot of european leaders are trying to create ties with donald trump. but at the same time, it also seems as though he's meeting with european leaders who are similar inclined as himself. what do you make of it? >> no, definitely. >> we're seeing a lot of symmetry between trump and particular of the far right leaders in europe, and there's been definitely a rise of both leaders in the far right, but also the parties on the far right. >> we've seen this in not just italy, but also hungary, austria, slovakia and so forth, and trump and elon musk are forging closer ties. they share similar ideas on immigration or being anti-woke and along these lines, they have been connecting. now in terms of the case of meloni, she doesn't see musk or trump as a threat to her italian policies that are based on making things in italy and supporting italian companies. and she's hoping that this relationship will only strengthen italy. now, as far as tr

natasha, how is it now? where is it going? do you think?> bill, there's been some good news overnight, and that is that they prevented that fire from coming this way. that's the mandeville canyon below us. there are a lot of homes down below, and we still see on occasion some smoke rising in different spots. so there are active fires going on. and we do see aircraft flying over us at certain points trying to pick up water and drop more. behind us there, over the ridge, especially and down below. but the good news is that the winds right this second are rather calm. and then when they do pick up, we're noticing for the most part that it's blowing this way where things have already burned. and that is great for right now, even though we expect the winds to pick up more tonight into the coming week. and so that's where things could get a little bit unpredictable. but at this very moment, they might be getting, you know, slightly calmer situation, which is so welcome at this point. there are a lot of residents who are notably very frustrated tr

let's get to natasha bertrand. natasha, what will this look like over the coming days and weeks? >> well, john, i just have to say, i have to point out here that one of the more striking aspects of his appearance on the steps there, entering into the pentagon, was the fact that chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general c-q brown, was there to greet him. someone that hegseth before he was nominated to serve as secretary of defense, had said should actually be removed from his position because he is a, quote, woke and he is part of the cadre of generals that needs to be eliminated from the military. so the fact that it appears that hegseth is trying to have a good relationship with brown and brown, of course, is is also trying is an interesting data point, to say the least, in terms of what we can expect. hegseth did lay out several executive orders that he does expect the president to be signing today that could reshape the military, including, he said, an iron dome for america, which is which is a new one that we had not heard previously. reinstating service members who were

natasha, what are you seeing? >> and, boris, there are those tens of thousands of people you mentioned who are not able to be in their homes right now, but the fact that i'm about to show you this burn scar area, this is all indication of good news. they seem to have some control over this because all we see are burned out hillsides and a little bit of hotspots here and there where you see a little smoke pick up in the distance. this whole area burned yesterday and overnight. and because the winds were actually not as severe as they were, for example, on the first day of the palisades fire that really gave fire crews an advantage yesterday and overnight. another advantage is the fact that because of the palisades and eaton fire, there were so many resources from other states from canada that they were able to divert crews here to have a very aggressive attack on this right from the get go, with aircraft flying. and and they could do that because the winds were favorable. so they actually feel like there is some co

but natasha and we've heard from so many other people this is like something they've never seen before. so it's genuinely different. >> apocalyptic. yeah. and we're also hearing some more news coming in to cnn that residents in malibu have been urged to get ready to evacuate, even though they're not under evacuation orders. and part of the reason for that is that this could actually help avoid traffic congestion and delays. if an order is later issued. we've been talking, max, about, you know, the congestion on the roads, cars being abandoned. so i guess authorities are trying to avoid that sort of situation. >> and i was seeing how, you know, a lot of these are when it comes to the beachfront homes, the really expensive ones. the roads are smaller coming out of there to try to get to the highway. so all of those are being very tightly congested. >> yeah, they're almost hemmed in actually, by the pacific coast highway, which is part of the problem, i guess, for the teams as well, trying to get in to help with those evacuations. the, the authorities. >> um, now, a passenger on a flight

and i do want to go to las vegas now, where natasha chen is, and natasha, because i know that you have just gotten some new information about information notes that the cybertruck driver left behind. what have you found out? >> aaron, in the last ten minutes or so, investigators here in las vegas sent the full transcript of a couple of letters they found that they believe were written by matthew livelsberger. this these writings are covering a range of grievances. they he talks about political grievances, cultural issues, for example, not being a fan of diversity initiatives, expressed support for president trump and elon musk. that's the first time we're seeing direct mention of the former president. he also talks about conflicts overseas. he talks about domestic issues, societal issues, and there is also a letter addressed to fellow service members during the press conference this afternoon. there were some portions of these letters read to the media by investigators in hopes that it offered a little more context as to what might have been his state of mind. investigators, at the end

natasha, let me ask you, what are you hearing about pete hegseth? call it his first official day at the pentagon. >> yeah. kate. so we do expect him to be arriving here around 9 a.m. following that extremely narrow confirmation vote last week, he was in the building a little bit over the weekend. he did, as you mentioned, speak to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. and that actually followed the trump administration's decision to lift a ban imposed by biden on the shipment of 200 0 pound bombs to israel. and so hegseth clearly wanted to get the ball rolling on developing a relationship directly with netanyahu, one of the most important relationships, of course, that the pentagon can have with an ally. and so we do expect him to continue a lot of the work this week that was actually begun last week before he was even confirmed. and that was done under the acting defense secretary, including a lot of work on immigration. of course, sending additional u.s. troops down to the border, conducting military airlifts and repatriation flights of migra

. >> cnn's natasha bertrand is at the pentagon. natasha, what are you learning? >> well, brianna, one of the really key aspects of the investigation, of course, is going to be that black box inside the black hawk helicopter, which, according to secretary of defense pete hegseth, that has not been retrieved yet. but we saw president trump post on truth social earlier this morning that he made basically a definitive assessment that the helicopter was flying too high. seeming to suggest that that was the reason for this collision. but pete hegseth again, who is newly installed as the secretary of defense, he would not go that far. in an interview earlier today on fox and friends, saying that all of that is still under investigation. here's what he said. we do not appear to have that sound at this moment, but he said that this was not necessarily conclusive at this point. it's not only the altitude that is potentially at issue here, but also the course that the helicopter was flying on. was it deviated in any way, in a way that would actually bring it a little bit cl
