natasha chen is on the scene now in miami-dade county, and natasha, what are you learning this afternoon? >> reporter: yeah, jessica, just now, the family of someone who died on scene has just arrived. they claim that one of the people who died overnight is their son and so it's a very emotional scene right now, and it's unfortunately one that is all too familiar as you just said with the amount of violence we've seen over the past months and years. this particular person said that his son was in his 20s. he is very emotional right now, trying to speak to the cameras and to the law enforcement investigators here saying that, you know, they killed the wrong person. just very heartbreaking to listen to. the victim's mother seems to be very upset as well. telling people what we know happened here overnight, between midnight and 1:00 a.m. miami-dade police tell us a white nissan pathfind erroled up in the strip mall, right outside an establishment that is advertised as a billiards club, a private lounge. there was apparently a private show going on. three people stepped out of that car with

natasha chen has more. >> reporter: on new year's eve, jamal sutherland's family says they brought himalth facility as they say he long struggled with mental illness. five days later, sutherland allegedly punched a staff member in the midst of a fight between patients and staff. >> several patients are fighting right now. >> reporter: sutherland was taken to the county jail but not to the medical facility. instead to an area reserved for misbehaving inmates according to a family attorney. >> let go of me now! i need my medicine! >> reporter: at 9:15 the next morning, charleston county deputies attempted to move him from his jail cell for his scheduled bond hearing. >> i'll be back. >> reporter: in the videos, a deputy is heard saying sutherland has refused to leave his cell and took a, quote, aggressive stance. at 9:29 a.m. you can hear sounds of pepper spray being used. and sutherland coughing with a blanket around his head. after a few minutes of sutherland not complying to come to the door, another round of pepper spray. then deputies open the door a third time. then you can hear a

cnn's natasha chen is in elizabeth city. natasha, what is happening? i see you walk with many of the demonstrators. >> reporter: that's right, we are walking with the family of andrew brown jr. at the front of the line. behind us, and a lot of people have gathered today for this rally and this march, and we are currently approaching the home of andrew brown jr., where he was shot and killed by the sheriff's deputies on wednesday morning, april 20th. and of course, like you said, only 20 seconds of body camera footage has actually been shown to the family. a judge has determined the family can see more video, but that has yet to happen and the judge also denied a request for that video to be publicly released. so right now this crowd is really asking for transparency here, asking for justice, and they have made it very clear that out of respect for the family that's with us today, that there is absolutely to be no aggressive violent behavior, no weapons here, no damage to other property. so really, very controlled situation where they are perhaps loud w

cnn's natasha chen just arrived at the scene. what are you learning there?s is the unincorporated part of miami-dade county. we're in what is a strip mall essentially here, and the entire place is blocked off right now. we are on the edge of it. we can see there are some law enforcement there outside of the establishment, still working very hard. a lot of other vehicles here. a lot of first responders came to the scene very quickly when this happened as we understand the shooting was just after midnight, outside what seems to be a lounge, where there was a scheduled concert. police say two people have died and more than 20 are injured, and some of them were taken to area hospitals via first responders, via ambulance. some of them arrived at these hospitals themselves. at least one of the injured in critical condition. here's the director of the miami-dade police talking about this incident. >> this is a despicable act of gun violence, a cowardly act. this type of gun violence has to stop. every weekend is the same thing. this is targeted, this is definitely

natasha chen is on the scene now in miami-dade county. natasha, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we just saw k-9s arrive on the scene, investigators have been working all morning since this happened. police say the shooting happened between midnight and 1:00 a.m. outside of a lounge business that was hosting a private event, a private show. and that some of the guests, the customers, were standing outside when this happened. police say that a white nissan path finder pulled up, three people got out with assault rifles and handguns and started shooting indiscriminately into the crowd. two people have died. as you mentioned, more than 20 others injured, some of them taken to hospitals by ambulance, some of them taken to the hospitals privately in their own cars. so a lot of chaos here and what we're seeing is that from the aerial images shot by one of our affiliates, at least we're seeing two people, what seemed to be two people on the ground covered there. it's a very fluid scene, very emotional for the people involved. one woman came by the scene and said that her so

natasha chen joining us live in atlanta. natasha, tell us more about the reopening plans around the country. >> yeah, fred, we've seen how those reopening plans vary greatly from state to state but the attitudes vary too from urban areas versus rural areas. here in atlanta in georgia, any remaining social distancing requirements were lifted already in early may, may 1. but new york -- new york city just lifted its requirements for vaccinated people. they don't have to wear masks nor have to social distance. as of last wednesday, california announced june 15th they're lifting restrictions as well. so things are definitely starting to change and open up across the country, even for the states that were more restrictive. of course, that's following the recent cdc guidelines allowing fully vaccinated people to not have to wear masks in public. and that's what we are seeing here on the beltline, that really goes through much of the city of atlanta. most people are not wearing masks here. people are enjoying the weather n and peopl

cnn's natasha chen is at a gas station in charleston, south carolina.e situation there in charleston? >> well, fred, it does actually seem like a lot of visitors are in town, so i don't know how much they've been stopped by this. but what we're seeing is this particular gas station behind us has not seen any new fuel supply in the last couple of days and they're not clear on when they might get more supply. that being said, other gas stations around the same area have seen new supply in the last couple of days so it really is hit or miss, and, according to the app gas buddy, which is crowd sourced by drivers self-reporting outages and prices across the country, it does seem that at this time south carolina is seeing 46% of gas stations without fuel. georgia's experiencing around the same. north carolina, as you mentioned, 57% of gas stations without fuel. that state is actually seeing probably some of the best improvement over the last couple of days, but still the worst off washington, d.c. currently as of this afternoon, 81% of the stations there with

natasha chen is at a shell gas station in charleston, south carolina. the pipeline is back in action, but the question is, how fast can the fuel be delivered to gas pumps like where you are? >> reporter: that's right, fred. the colonial pipeline did say today they are at normal operations, but think of the facts that the fuel flows through this pipeline at about 5 miles per hour, and, of course, we have issues on the road, lots of states have lifted weight restrictions for these trucks to bring this fuel to the pump. it could take some time for people to see some normalcy here. the pumps behind us have yellow bags on top of them. this is the case for about half of the gas stations across south carolina right now, though in the city of charleston where we are, it's a little bit better than that. let's show you a map of what gas buddy saying is the situation right now. keep in mind these are crowd-sourced numbers, so drivers are self-reporting what they're seeing at these gas stations. you mentioned 81% of gas stations out in dc, fewer than half out in so

bridgeton, new jersey, a shooting at a house party left two people dead and another 12 wounded, cnn's natasha chen, how does this gun violence we're seeing compare to what has been seen in recent years? >> yeah, fred, compared to the same time period in previous years, that is from january to this point in may, it is definitely an uptick. we are outpacing the rate of gun deaths in the same amount of time in 2019 and 2020. to highlight a few of the incidents you were mentioning there, as you mentioned in bridgeton, new jersey there was a shooting where two people died, a man and a woman, 12 people injured at what seems to be a party, i think we have some aerials to show you of that scene, and how chaotic that was, our polo sandoval is out there finding more details on that situation. and we also just showed you a map there of a number of the shootings that we have learned about from coast-to-coast that includes jersey city, it includes minneapolis, and the bronx, a subway shooting there. and, you know, north charleston as well, we're seeing a lot of these shooting incidents also involve the deaths

cnn's natasha chen is with us now from north carolina. what more are you learning? >> fred , on tuesday the family of andrew brown jr. will see more of that video according to a judge's court order and that will happen right in the building behind us. right now a lot of people marching this morning have been signing two notices of demands that are being posted on the doors. those demands include the release of the full tapes, a special prosecutor and i'm standing with a couple of the attorneys for the brown family, harry daniels and chance lynch, who just came on to the legal team yesterday. tell me, mr. lynch, you're new to the legal team. what is it that strikes you about this current moment, a couple of days before the family sees the video, what are you going to be focusing on? >> well, i want to make sure, today, all day long, we've been focusing on true transparency and accountability and that's what we're demanding. i'm honored to be a part of the legal team with so many experts. my focus is we want to is he the entirety of these videos. and they're suggestin

let's go to cnn's natasha chen in charleston, south carolina, where many gas stations are still out of service. what's happening where you are, natasha? >> reporter: amara, this one is out of service. they haven't seen any fuel supply in several days. there are other gas stations, though, around this area in charleston who did get supply overnight. so they were out and now they are back this morning. so we're seeing slow improvement. across the state it's still about a 50/50 chance whether you're going to hit a gas station with gas or not. here in charleston it's a little bit better than that. we're seeing about two-thirds of the stations now with gas, according to the gas buddy app, which of course is dependent on crowd sourcing. so really it depends on drivers' self-reporting what they see at the pump. right now there is some improvement across the southeastern states, most notably we've been talking about dc, the majority of gas stations there not having any fuel. but as of this morning, that now seems to be at 81%. so that's some improvement. still quite a situation they have over

natasha chen joins us live from elizabeth city. >> reporter: the family is now inside as well as a numberndees. they are currently hearing from pastors offering words of comfort, offering prayers right now. and in a few minutes they will hear from several of the children of andrew brown jr. along with their attorney benjamin crump and then later in the service they will hear a eulogy from reverend al sharpton. there are a lot of folks in there, a lot of speeches expected. earlier, when the family arrived and the casket arrived there was also a plane flying overhead saying andrew brown jr. never forgotten. this is a difficult moment because while they are grieving, and celebrating his life, they are also still trying to seek justice. at this point, 12 days after his death on april 21st, only two family members of the brown family have actually seen 20 seconds of body camera footage. that was footage redacted with blurred faces, shown to them by the county attorney. of course the rest of the family members were also expecting to be able to see that and they did not. so right now a judge, as

cnn's natasha chen joining us now. i know police and the mayor just held a news conference.did we learn? >> reporter: well, erica, a lot is still out there, a lot of questions marks, but what we do have is brand-new video that the police released publicly to ask the public's help in identifying these people and this car. if we can show that, this happens very quickly, but you see three individuals getting out of a white nissan pathfinder, they exit the vehicle, police say they fired shots at a crowd standing outside of this establishment, this lounge hosting a private concert and really from the video we're seeing within seconds they are getting back into that car and fleeing the scene. police explained that when they shot at people standing outside that venue the people there shot back at them and so that's why perhaps we were seeing so many markings on the ground yesterday for shell casings outside of that business. in walking about the people who were shot, police say there were 23 in total, two people were killed, three of the injured remain in critical condition right n

cnn's natasha chen live in miami-dade county, florida, with the latest on this. eporter: yeah, so police have set up a podium behind us at headquarters in preparation for this press conference that's happening in less than two hours. hopefully we can find out more details about this event that happened, as they say, just after midnight early sunday morning outside that club, lounge venue, where police say a private show or concert was being given. patrons were standing outside in the parking lot of what is essentially a strip mall when a white nissan pathfinder pulled up, three people got out, started using assault rifles and handguns and started shooting at the crowd indiscriminately in what they call a targeted attack. of course, more than 20 people were injured, shot at. two people died. in checking around the area hospitals where the injured were taken to, at least two are in critical condition still right now. there is a considerable reward for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for this. that includes $100,000 donation from a miami b

natasha chen is there with more. >> reporter: protesters marched all the way to andrew brown's housere he was shot and killed on april 21st. they moved on to the sheriff's office all demanding transparency. family members and the brown attorney say only two family members have seen the 20-second footage from the body camera shown to them last week. the judge said that it shouldn't be released to the public at this time. >> i do not understand what they are trying to accomplish. what is the purpose of having the video and taxpayers paying for body cameras if they are not going to be seen? i think we are grieving but we are doing what we have to do because of the way that things happened. we have to be here. we have to support. we have to protest. we know that we have a long road ahead and this is literally just the beginning. >> the brown family walked at the front of sunday's march. there was a public viewing for the body and there will be a funeral held. >> later today israel's parliament will hold a memorial for the 45 victims killed in a stampede on friday at a religious festival.
