let's bring in now cnn's natasha bertran, what more can you tell us? >> reporter: the u.s.arine corps did confirm that four marines were involved in a training accident in norway where they were part of this training mission by nato involving about 30,000 troops from 27 different countries, including thousands of marines there. and what we can tell from the statements that have been put out so far, these four service members were traveling on an osprey in northern norway heading to a peninsula north of the arctic circle when their plane crashed. the rescue mission did get there, but it was difficult for them to do so because of the very bad weather, and that is likely what contributed to the crash of this aircraft. the terrain, of course, is very challenging and the weather was so harsh that there was an avalanche warning. all of this likely contributing to the accident. now, it's important to note that this nato training mission really has nothing to do, per se, with the war by russia in ukraine. of course, nato has been conducting these kinds of training activities for se
