"outfront" tonight, president biden on his way back to the white house. this is the taliban makes their presence known across afghanistan. today holding a press conference. they had a whole press conference and releasing a video of their co-founder arriving. it is the first time he's stepped foot in afghanistan in 20 years. hugely symbolic picture and a huge victory for the taliban. taliban forces are negotiating with the united states to ensure the safety of americans still stuck inside afghanistan. the takeover comes as the white house is mounting a full throated defense of the administration's response to the withdrawal of the few remaining u.s. troops who have been holding afghanistan firmly. national security advisor jake sullivan

thank you, nate. i also want to give a special thanks to the wisconsin historical society press since this is their book that it's coming out here. and what better way to talk about the upcoming book than with the author, himself, jeff kannel? so, jeff, let's talk about the book if we can. >> okay. well, thank you a lot for inviting me to be here. this is the first presentation i made since -- on the book. and it's -- it's still not in stores but it will be fairly soon i hear. um -- my father was a history teacher. and civil war was a special interest of his. and in all the conversations he and i had about it, neither one of us was aware that african-americans from wisconsin had served in the civil war. it wasn't part of the history that i learned or that my dad taught. about ten years ago, i was at the kenosha civil war museum and met a group of reenactors for company f. a group from milwaukee. because of them, i started researching -- um -- african-american soldiers from wisconsin, and found many hu

post: that's nate. along with that address, plenty of coverage throughout the day on c-span about the various events, reacting to the fall of kabul, including the emergency you and security council meeting yesterday morning. the u.s. ambassador to the next steps for refugees in afghanistan. here's a portion of what she had to say. thank you for that, nate. thank you for those comments. you're right. it's that humanity behind the history that really makes it impactful, makes it a way you can connect with that legacy and that past and those stories in a way that you can't do otherwise. that's something we strive to do at the veterans museum. you're exactly right, this book is a perfect augmentation of that as well. if anyone's on the call that heard me before, i like alliteration. it's the humanity and the history. it's the faces behind the facts that make the difference. that's why they need to be retold. they shouldn't be hidden off somewhere or not covered. so actually, jeff, that brings me back to you. i have a couple questions for you. what are some take-aways? you got to know the individuals in this book better than any of us. you know, we've got a few of them in our collection at the veterans museum. what are some take-aways of getting to know history at that individual level and, frankly, to be able to tell their stories that haven't been told before? >> there are a lot of

here's nate silver. >> it's true thats becoming mor and more racially diverse.ard. the voting preferences of groups are not static. no racial group votes as a monolith. democrats for example went from having 71% of the hispanic vote in 2016 to 63% in 2020. the white share of the population is declining, but still the majority. keep in mind the state that represents in 2020 an election year when democrats just barely won the congress and under performed in iowa where 62% of voters were whites without college degrees. just as important, it matters where those voters are distributed. democrats tend to be in urban areas. mostly in coastal states. while california is very blue, and very diverse, arkansas and massachusetts in the latest data is still 68% nonhispanic white. of course arkansas gets just as many senators as california. republicans have control of the redirecting process in 43% of congressional districts as compared to 17% for democrats. the rest are nonpartisan or split. this week's news will help democrats in new york where dps democrats run redirecting
