and when i set out to write nate, it was actually at the advice of my agent, brenda bowen who said write the book only you can write. and so at the time i was working on the show, billy elliot. and i was one of the coaches for the boys in the show. and i felt such a kinship with them. so when i wrote "better nathan ever," i dull into -- nate than ever i sort of began realizing i was going to be gay. there's no verb about it at this time it was only a noun or an adjective. so the response i get from people now -- and i think it's one of the exciting things about writing for young people -- is when you write for young people, you don't just write for them you write more their parents and aunts and booksellers and librarians. and so what i hear just like you said, ellen is people who write to say i'm a 70-year-old gay man, and if i had had this book when i was in middle school, i wouldn't have maybe have been in the close earth for the -- clottest for the -- or 12-year-old boys who say i'm the only boy in my dance class in utah and it was so cool to read a character like nate. whatever that

so there are days when i feel like a fighter, and after they canceled that visit, better nate became new york times book of the year, and i sent the a memo to the school board fyi -- [laughter] but then there's ore days -- other days where you go, actually, you go and mute that conversation, and haters are going to hate. and i really do believe that within any civil rights movement which this is a part of, i believe i believe that within any civil rights movement there are days like larry kramer where you have to stand on the soap box and yell "we are in a war," and then there are days where you say can we get those beer flights with matt dela peÑa? [laughter] so the way we prevent it in the future is to keep telling our stories. and publishers, keep publishing books like this. and also booksellers and librarians, you're the gatekeepers we're really talking to the because the authors are out there. look around. the authors are here wanting to tell these stories. the publishers are publishing them beautifully. but we ultimately don't get young readers unless the gatekeepers which is t
