and when i set out to write nate, it was actually at the advice of my agent, brenda bowen who said write the book only you can write. and so at the time i was working on the show, billy elliot. and i was one of the coaches for the boys in the show. and i felt such a kinship with them. so when i wrote "better nathan ever," i dull into -- nate than ever i sort of began realizing i was going to be gay. there's no verb about it at this time it was only a noun or an adjective. so the response i get from people now -- and i think it's one of the exciting things about writing for young people -- is when you write for young people, you don't just write for them you write more their parents and aunts and booksellers and librarians. and so what i hear just like you said, ellen is people who write to say i'm a 70-year-old gay man, and if i had had this book when i was in middle school, i wouldn't have maybe have been in the close earth for the -- clottest for the -- or 12-year-old boys who say i'm the only boy in my dance class in utah and it was so cool to read a character like nate. whatever that
