nathan cirillo. this is one from twitter believed to be the last image of the army reservist. cirillo not only fulfilling his duty but revealing the man he was. a dog lover. a patriot. a dad. one picture has touched the nation like no other and it doesn't show nathan cirillo's face at all. it's a cartoon from halifax herald. one columnist calls it the perfect tribute to the soldier. joining me now, the creator from halifax, nova scotia. bruce, welcome. and explain to me what we're seeing in the cartoon. >> the national war monument at which the incident took place or all started yesterday is a short distance from our parliament buildings on parliament hill and when the incident happened and it was ongoing. it went into parliament and the shooting happened there, but the initial incident obviously nathan cirillo was killed at that monument while standing guard so that monument in any case, any war monument, is a very, very powerful symbol and to have one of the guards shot at the monument, the imagery there in is going to be very extreme and very potent and so that was the firs

24-year-old corporal nathan cirillo seen this picture is the victim. police say the gunmen identified as michael zehaf-bibeau fled the scene and entered parliament's main building a couple of blocks away. that is when a gun battle erupted inside with members of the house of commons steps away. officials say the gunman was killed by 58 killed kevin vickers, the sergeant at arms. the suspect, a canadian born convert to islam, had been flagged as a person sympathetic to the islamic state. >> this week's events are a grim reminder that canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world. let there be no misunderstanding we will not be intimidated. canada will never be

nathan cirillo was an honor guard on duty at the war memorial when he was shot. the 24-year-old died shortly after the attack. he was a personal trainer, a bouncer, he rescued dogs in his free time. supposed to be a wonderful, wonderful guy. friends say his smile would just light up a room. >> i just didn't want to believe it. he was such an amazing person amazing father amazing friend. he rescued dogs, he was just an awesome person. >> a tragic unnecessary loss. cirillo was holding a rifle at the time he was shot as all honor guards do but these rifles are not loaded. they are ceremonial. >>> also today as we've been talking about, the shootout could have been much much worse. remember legislators, that country's leaders were meeting nearby. it would have been much worse not for the actions of that one man we just showed you minutes ago, kevin vickers, the sergeant of arms. he led a procession into the parliament chambers this morning. he is a hero after what he did in that shooting after he took down the lone gunman. vic kers is 58 years old. he has been in law

the soldier is identified as corporal nathan cirillo. he leighs behind a young son. in an address to the nation, prime minister stephen harper called the shooting a grim reminder that the country is not immune to terrorist attacks. >> we will not be intimidated. canada will never be intimidated. that will lead our resolve to double our efforts to take all necessary steps to identify threats and keep canada safe here at home. >> reporter: 9:52 a.m., a blaze of gunfire at the war memorial in ottawa. one of two soldiers standing guard at the memorial is gunned down. >> i was locking my bike up. i heard four shots. from that direction, i turned around and ran. and i saw one of those soldiers laying on the ground. >> eyewitness peter henderson tells cnn the shots sounded like they came from a high-powered rifle. other witnesses describe the shooter as a man with dark hair and a scarf on his head. carrying a huge rifle. >> the man just came around the corner of the prime minister's office, put the gun on his shoulder an fired four shots into the back of this shoulder. >> h

around 9:50 coming from behind the war memorial on the west side where he fires twice at reservist nathan cirillo. the shooter is positioned on an angle behind the victim where they cannot see him coming as they are facing south. the shooter fires one shot at the second guard but he missed him. witnesses heard the suspect yelling something that we don't know what it is in english and then running towards the north. the investigation revealed that he used the beige vehicle and headed to welington. the first calls received via 911 were at around 9:52:36. he parked his vehicle in front of the elgin entrance and you'll be able to see the slides as we go through the chronology. he accessed the grounds at parliament hill on foot and started running towards the east block where members of parliament's vehicles with parked. at 9:53:16, the suspect overtook one of these vehicles and drove towards center block. at 9:53:37, he immobilized the second vehicle and starting run towards the main doors of center block. at that point, vehicles on site chased the suspect to the entrance of certain block. the suspec

beyond that crowd there is a row of nathan cirillo's colleagues. those members of the army reserve unit that he was a part of, they have been standing in attention for some 15 minutes, very quietly there. it's very difficult to make out because they are past the crowd but they have come to pay their respects. this is an army reserve unit if you look it up, it's the primary war fighters. they're in charge of essentially terminating the enemy. all of his troops, his colleagues are here, paying their respects to the fallen comrade. what we can tell you about the investigation is that u.s. a authorities are looking and trying to track down any information about the gunman. they have his passport. it was confiscatconfiscated. all that information was dispersed both the u.s. authorities as well as canadian authorities and they're trying to get a more complete picture of exactly what he was doing. we did speak to one of our cbc colleagues and apparently he may have been staying at a mission not far from this location and he had been there anywhere between

moments later, nathan cirillo was shot. the shootings have prompted tighter security measures across that country. some canadian military basis have been locked down. >> it emphasizes the degree to which we have to remain vigilant when it comes to dealing with these kinds of acts of sourceless violence. >> president obama condemned the violence, offered assistance to canada's government. authorities are investigating whether there are any lengths to terrorism. israeli police are describing a dedzly collision in jerusalem today as a terrorist attack. a baby killed in the crash was reportedly a u.s. citizen. several others were injured when a car hit a crowd of people near a train station. police say they shot the driver as he tried to run. they identified him as a palestinian resident of arab east jerusalem. a spokesman for the israeli prime minister office said authorities have stepped up security there. new developments in the search for 43 students who disappeared last month in mexico. the country's attorney general says
