[ cheers ] and you, you were, you've been on broadway with him before. >> i was on broadway with him six years ago. we did "waiting for godot." >> seth: uh-huh. >> uh, 1978 i did my first play theater. and nathan was in it, as well as dann florek who's in "the front page" as well. >> seth: and that "midsummer night's dream", this is not the conventional shakespeare "midsummer night's dream." >> well, it was based on shakespeare. >> seth: uh-huh. >> no, it was shakespeare, but it was a -- a disco version. [ laughter ] >> seth: so in 1970 -- >> the director had, the director had the concept while walking through studio 54 one night, and goes, this is not unlike a dream. >> seth: oh, no. when he had that idea? >> i don't think he could afford em'. nathan lane, did you have any sense of the kind of talent he had at that age? >> yeah. >> seth: oh, you did. >> very much, yeah. and i used to go see him after that, do stand-up and his act around town. >> seth: and john slattery is in the play as well. >> yeah. >> seth: and do you and slattery have history? >> uh, just a little bit. we did a radio play about ten years ago, in dumbo brooklyn. the coen brothers, wrote my part of it. >> seth: and the coen brothers, you have a, i think a lot of us know you, from those films. you have a long history -- >> i have a storied history with them. >> seth: you have a storied history. how did the storied history, "raising arizona", is your first film with them, right? >> yeah. >> seth: how does, so that's obviously the big one. that's the big audition, you get that part, and then that gets you all the others. how did that go down? >> i -- very well, apparently. >> seth: yeah. [ light laughter ] >> yeah, no i, i went in there. i didn't know a thing about em'. they had one film that i saw after the audition, but we just went

it features an all-star ensemble cast, including nathan lane and john goodman. >> it's a great americanould have only been written here at that particular time when things were popping all over the place. and it-- it covers a wide range of topics. but it does so with human characters. i've never-- i haven't done a style like this since i was at college doing a restoration piece. it's different from anything i'd ever done, and i'm so glad i was asked on board because it's-- it's a challenge-- it's a challenge, for me, but it's so much damn fun. >> rose: nathan. >> most people associate this with "his girl friday" which was a great idea by howard hawks to make hildty johnson a woman. and they created sort of the first screwball comedy. but the play is not screwball com-- dee. it's dark comedy mixed with melodrama that somehow by the third act spins into the edge of farce. so it's highly unusual because it's-- it was put together by jed harris, who is the producer, and got the manuscript. gave it to george f. kaufman, one of the great men of the theater, director and writer and said, "fix
