the national archives. today, as we gather in this rotunda, we remember and honor the lives lost. on september 11th, a solemn of our resilience of as a nation and the enduring power of unity and compassion. everyone today has played a role in supporting me and the national archives. and i appreciate each of you for your friendship and for support. it is the honor of a lifetime to serve as the 11th archivist of the united states. it's not lost on me today that i'm the first woman appointed to serve in this role. you might have guessed it that it matters to me what i'm wearing today. i wore white today to recognize those who made it possible for me to stand here today and take oath. the suffragists didn't sign the declaration of independence or the constitution, so they aren't on these murals behind me. but they're a contribution to the vitality of our democracy is no less meaningful. along with many other inspiring leaders. american history. they believed the principles enshrined in these documents and claim

so that the national archives are the custody and the stewards of those materials, which is the same for what is referred as a barack obama presidential library. but that is actually the archive. i think the thing that is complex to it is that the presidency that is, you know, the main kind of thrust of this particular story is also the story of the nation's first digital president. it is that which means that the majority, 95% of those presidential records were born digital without paper equivalents. that means that the president wanted to ensure that in building the center this complex that we were giving over as much real estate as possible to every day people hence partnering with the chicago public library system, it means that scholars and for researchers and interested readers who want to really delve into the history of this administration, those materials is still available through the national archives, the obama foundation is helping to digitize the remaining. 5% of those textual records, the unclassified records. that still means some 26 million pages to be digitized. and
