so i think i learned a very interesting lessen because i was a judge on the national book award a few years ago. and what i learned was that you have to be a little subversive. so there were a few books. there was one book by a diverse author, and i will say that it became my favorite because of its literary merit. so -- and i recommend this for anybody who's ever on an awards panel judging. we went to lunch i went to everybody that were the other judges finished their beer flights and then i came in strong for this book. at first i thought the reason i was doing this was because it was about a vietnamese girl who moved from wartime vietnam and moved to alabama, and i thought maybe this will be an important book for a young foreign exchange student who ends up in a white area. it'll be so important for her to have this book. that's kind of thinking narrow. it's actually more important to me that the kids that are in that class read a book like that and then feel more comfortable and more familiar and know what they don't know about the foreign exchange student who comes in. that's wha
