demonstrators with some potential for violence, not a directed, coordinated violent attack for the nation's capitol. i consider those two different things. >> reporter: now while investigators continue to make arrests in connection with the capitol attack, one former fbi official we spoke to, greg erie, says he's concerned about the oath keepers, three percenters and other groups combining forces to possibly coordinate attacks in the future. i want to return now to the state of our nation's capitol. not just what is happening in congress but on the streets. because there are still those tens of thousands of angry mobsters who were at the capitol, are now roaming the streets of d.c. despite the fact that there is a curfew here. krrk bs's kris van cleave has been on the mall and outside the capitol all day. chris, you were an eye witness to the thousands of law enforcement that tried to remove and pushback that angry mob. what is happening now? well norah, certainly the area around the capitol has turned very quiet. you can see the national guard is still here. the mob, the crowd largely gone, almost entirely gone at this hour. the city is under a curfew. we know that as of 9:30 tonight d.c. police have made at least 30 curfew violation arrests. we saw a handful of people taken into custody in front of us here earlier. and part of the reason why the capitol grounds are so quiet, basically in every direction you look you are going to see flashing police lights. you can see over there

there's very disturbing breaking news unfolding right now about a serious arrest here in the nation's capitol. tell us what we know. >> reporter: yeah. so that arrest, wolf, happening by the capitol police where it happened on the north capitol side. what we've learned is that a man driving a pickup truck came up to a checkpoint. many, many checkpoints set up across washington, d.c. he drove up to this checkpoint and he displayed what appeared to be a fake inauguration pass, some kind of inaugural credential that the officials, the police there, realized were fake. they then also saw some indications that perhaps he had some weapons in the vehicle. they questioned this man. his name is wesley allen beeler from virginia. he said he had weapons in the car. so they found a 9 millimeter glock. most concerning, they found over 500 rounds of ammunition. some of it belonging to that weapon. others having to do with a rifle or something like that. obviously what's very concerning for authorities here, wolf, is that he had this fake inaugural credential, and that is something that, of course, investig

it's not just the nation's capitol. states all across the country are tightening security after the fbi warned of armed protests being planned at all 50 state capitols. i want to start with cnn matt rivers who is in austin, texas. matt, what's happening there? >> reporter: yeah, ana, we're right outside the state capitol grounds. we're not allowed on the grounds because they are closed, as is the state capitol building. that is being done according to the department of public safety here out of an abundance of caution. it will be that way up until at least through the inauguration. on saturday we saw just a handful of protesters outside here in austin, some armed but all very, very peaceful, spending mainly the afternoon here protesting the election results. the big question is what happens tomorrow. we know the department of public safety is tracking at least two potential events that could happen here in austin. and you know, they're preparing for it. we don't know exactly how big those events are going to be but they

all right, martha raddatz live from our nation's capitol tonight. martha, thank you. >>> we are learning this evening of new concerns with the inauguration approaching, the nation's capital and state capitals in all 50 states on high alert. the intelligence, the chatter that's now been picked up about potential plots in the works. and tonight, that growing show of force around the capitol, thousands of national guard troops for the inauguration, already on duty, many are now armed. here's our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas with what he's learned tonight. >> reporter: tonight, exactly one week since the insurrection and one week until inauguration, the threat intensity rising. abc news has learned that authorities are monitoring up to ten organized events by demonstrators coming back to washington. some are calling it "a week of siege." they're warning one group is promising the largest armed protest on american soil. another event is planned to quote, capture and detain democratic politicians and set up a new government. to try and convict

. >> reporter: we're just outside the capitol, brianna, and much of the capitol look like a military compound. you see the national guard troops outside, but also this fencing with razor wiring encircling the entire capitol and dozens of national guard troops standing outside patrolling. more national guard troops arriving just this morning. we've been out here for the last few whours and troops arriving y the bus loads or so coming to this area, and to deal with one of the issues concerning it"the insider" threat, what we ever seen out here this morning, bomb-sniffing dogs are here. they are bringing these bomb-sniffing dogs over to smell the buses to make sure they're not carrying any bombs. also military vehicles. we've actually seen the bomb dogs sniffing these military vehicles as they were entering the compound. there are several layers of security from the perimeter, from the outer perimeter to the inside of the capitol and at every entrance, and at every intersection, military vehicles. now secret service agents as well who are checking i.d.s, checking vehicles. the secret service running the security oper

right now the nation's capitol preparing for possible unrest. the city in lockdown amid these extraordinary security threats ahead of joe biden's inauguration. the pentagon just increased the number of troops that will surround the area. there will now be at least 25,000 national guard members there. that's more than afghanistan, iraq and syria combined. and it comes as we're learning chilling new information about the insurrection at the capitol. according to the "washington post," capitol police were warned three days before the invasion about a potentially violent scenario in, quote, which congress would be targeted. sources tell cnn the fbi and homeland security failed to share the intelligence they had about threats of possible attacks. this raises new questions as investigators continue to try to understand what happened that day. as of last night, they've opened 275 criminal cages and have charge nearly 100 alleged insurrectionists. cnn has just learned that the man seen in this video smashing the capitol hill window with what appears to

. >> reporter: but it's not just the nation's capitol under watch. federal prisons also on lockdown this week, capitol cities and capitol buildings in all 50 states under the microscope with governors calling in state national guards to keep things under control. several armed protests are expected over the next few days over anger that president trump lost telex and speaking of the president, he's the first president since 1869 not to go to his successor's inauguration on wednesday. the president will fly on air force one for one last time wednesday morning. he'll leave joint base andrews around 8:00 in the morning, land in palm beach, florida before president-elect biden becomes president joe biden. even when he's former president trump, the house, though, will transmit one impeachment article to the u.s. senate. there's a chance there could be a separate vote to keep trump from running for public office again. trump ally, senator lindsey graham, is begging incoming majority leader chuck schumer to call off the t senate trial. listen. >> if we embr

capitol hill is on high alert with 25,000 national guard troops and reenforcements amid threats of violent right extremism. drone video taken this morning showing a gorgeous picturesque washington, d.c. with the american flags there at the capitol where the mall, usually the centerpiece of a presidential inauguration is now closed off to the public. more than a week after that capitol insurrection, massive measures to protect this week's inauguration. security also heightened at state capitols across the country. the country now also bracing because of warnings of armed protests. those threats a direct result of the big lie propagated by outgoing president trump that he continues to incorrectly say he won the election. now a new cnn poll out this morning shows trump's steady drum beat of disinformation is helping to drive his approval to new lows as he exits the white house. let's begin our coverage in washington, d.c. cnn senior national security correspondent alex marquardt is on capitol hill for us. alex, explain the reenforcements that really are just about everywhere. >> reporter: fre
