the latest forecast from the national hurricane center rings it up -- brings it up crossing into a category by the time it makes landfall tomorrow morning. it is certainly a plenty strong hurricane. it is not as strong as they get. but that does not matter. category two or three hurricane is still plenty strong to create these storm surges we are talking about. >> you have written about how the fact that the waters are warmer than they have ever been on record have contributed to creating a strong hurricane. tell us about that. brian: this time of year, as we know, the ocean and gulf of mexico is very warm. even in an average year. but the water temperatures are warmer than average by a pretty good amount. when you are already at this warmest time of year, and you make it warmer still, it is a significant jump. and hurricanes love warm ocean water. the more warm the ocean gets the more they are prone to rapidly intensify. >> florida, as we know, has been battered by multiple hurricanes. there is a regular hurricane season. how well-prepared do you think florida is for idalia? brian: i think

john, i'm going to back you up 120 hours to the forecasts from the national hurricane center. they started out way down here near cancun. i know this looks like a spaghetti plot with no color, but these were the forecast from the national hurricane center. believe it or not, from 120 hours to what the president is, the spread was only 55 miles and, in fact, the very first forecast that, was put out five days ago, missed landfall by ten miles. ten. now, it was a category one in their forecast and it turned into be a major hurricane. we know that the category is the hardest thing to forecast. but when you can get it five days away, ten miles from where it actually hits, you've done your job. >> i have had officials tell me today that the accuracy of this forecast saved lives, chad. you can understand why. just remind us again, what's in store for the rest of the night? >> well, we still have a 65 mile per hour storm. it's not that far from savannah. it's the surge that's into charleston right now. we know that it's kind of over the batteries into the city, itself. and water is st

we just got that new forecast from the national hurricane center just moments ago and i want to go straight to derek van dam who is on the ground for us in tampa. s sara sidner is with us as well. derek, you understand what these forecasts mean better than anybody. what does this tell you? >> reporter: yeah, exactly what we feared, the rapid intensification now to a category 4 major hurricane idalia. and eyeing the big bend coast. but where i'm standing now on bay shore boulevard in tampa bay is proof that you do not need to be near the center of where the storm makes landfall in order to feel its impacts. what you are looking at is storm surge from tampa bay. this is what we were forecasting. 4 to 6 feet and it is certainly being realized. this is bay shore boulevard and you can see the waves coming crashing over the seawall. we get sprayed every 30 seconds or so. here comes another push of water. remember what is happening here, we have a high tide that just occurred at 4:00 this morning. but we also have inland flooding. and that with the surge of water from the eastern gulf of mexico, a

forecast. we talked about how the path today is moving more off to the east. >> sure. >> we saw that happen with the national hurricane center in their forecast because this area of low pressure near coastline, it's kind of buffering us. it's giving us a little bit of a shield in the bay area. >> pushing it east. >> exactly. so with this setup here, again, it's a better scenario for us. still worst in southern california. but i got to say if for some reason this were to move a little bit more off to the west, we may be talking about a path that goes more off to the west. so even though right now the heaviest is southern california, this is something we're going to watch all weekend long because with tropical systems, you could be 24, 18 hours out from an event. you see a small, subtle change. then everything can shift in the forecast. so, again, right now it does not look like it's direct impact for us. we're looking at some scattered thunderstorms. but this is the wild card we're going to closely watch. >> for our friends in san diego, sunday morning is kind of the time or monday? >> tomorrow it actually starts with some ra

this is the official forecast track from the national hurricane center. noticing the weakening storm. perhaps a low end category 1 or tropical storm as it makes landfall across baja. this is a significant difference. yesterday we were thinking it was a little further west. due to the topography, this would be more of a southern california type landfall. not the case. but it will bring the heaviest rainfall as well. look at the wind gusts associated with this. you can see allow they're on the eastern flank of this storm. we will get gusty winds over the western coastal region. san diego to los angeles. gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour. certainly the mountain ranges on the interior of southern california will see wind gusts, tropical storm force as well. and it will come out of a south easterly direction. or rather, northeast. this will help influence the rain that will pick up in intensity here. there are several mountain ranges across this area, intermittent between the desert southwest. these mountains will act as a barrier for this kind of, let's say, a
