national forest have over 7 million acres requiring reforestation. time is of the essence for efforts. research is finding that burned forests are regenerating to nonforest eco types. re-establishing forest is becoming more difficult to accomplish. prompt timber salvage can improve success and should be part of a strategy whenever possible. this can also help efforts for reforestation efforts. forests remove carbon quickly and large trees can store considerable amounts of carbon. unfortunately forests do not store carbon indefinitely. wood products also store carbon and can do so for long periods of time. by putting wood products into service, advanced wood products can have a solid return on investment because they can substitute for high carbon emissions. much of the work i'm discussing today isn't possible without forest product companies. longer term contracts and other mechanisms can be used to entice companies. forest products companies depend on them to sell timber. in the black hills the forest industry has been operating saw mills for over a
