in the era before they received official library designation from the national archives, the first of which began with herbert hoover. here, i benefited from another part of fate that permitted historians to study our 18th-century president. let's circle back to the question that began my research those many years ago, namely the question of james buchanan's sexuality. the more that i read, especially during the recent presidential election campaign season of 2020, in which both a lifelong bachelor cory booker, and an openly gay man, pete buttigieg, ran for president, the more that i found most people seem to consider buchanan our nation's first gay president. the story of how that interpretation came about is actually quite an interesting one. the earliest biographers of james buchanan, writing in the victorian era, said very little about his sexuality, avoiding even the topic of his failed engagement to anne coleman. later, buchanan biographers from 1920's through the 1960's followed the contemporary gossip in private letters and noticed the pair were referred to as the siamese twin
