[applause] >> thank you for this honor. my name is john cunningham. i am executive director of the national aids memorial grove. i really feel as a tribute to the public/private partnership that was entered into with the city and county of san francisco and the courage that his body as well as the board of supervisors and the then mayor took to step forward and realize that the community needed a space and had the courage to get a 99-year lease to a private organization that was very loosely assembled at that point -- working together over the last 20 years, we have transformed not only that landscape, but we have also transformed countless lives to have assembled there together. this year, which culminated the restoration of a 100-year-old victorian waterfall that resided in the location. we could not have done it without the public/private partnership that we forged 20 years ago with not only the commission and the city -- and i really want to commend general

a new film documents the growth of the national aids memorial grove in golden gate park here in san francisco. what began has a grassroots effort is now a national memorial. but not without growing pains. i recently spoke with filmmaker andy abrahams wilson about the story. but first, a flip from the documentary, "the grove." >> welcome, everyone. i'm jack. i'm with the volunteer but also on the board. as you know, we have our workdays the third saturday of the month. >> it seemed pretty daunting. but i think there were about 200 people at that first workday and it was almost as if we got in there and thought, well, i can do something about this. >> we didn't want to see lots of reminders of death. physiological changes happen when people go into nature. so it is a healing space. >> just the therapy of going out there and cutting away and planting and to do it in friendship with so many of the people who had a shared experience. so the minute we saw that, we knew that it was a magnificent metaphor and that we had to make it a national aids memorial. >> belva: why did you decide to make a film
