they did, and even the national park service didn't want anything to do with the idea of national parks. but, you know, this was -- in the bay area, this was the beginning of that movement. >> that's interesting to think that the national parks service itself did not want urban parks. >> well, they -- they thought of the perfect national park as being in wilderness like the rockies or alaska. places that were wild. and i think what was really particular about the pay area is that after world war ii, there are many infantrymen, people from the armed forces, the navy, who built ships here, and didn't want to leave. they loved where they were living. and that certainly was a great benefit for them and their families when they discovered the open spaces. the beaches such as that. >> so that kind of led to this continual clash, if you will, between do we preserve it or develop it because so many people need housing. and even marin county supervisors at that time weren't on board. they fought against preserving point reyes. is that right? >> yep. they fought against preserving point reyes. th

years the second most visited national park in our country. we get 14 million people a year that come to our parks. it has spectacular coastline, includes muir wood, alcatraz, we get to tell the stories, stories about essentially what you and your predecessors did this this area. our headquarters, fort mason, was the fisherman's wharf area was the port of embarkation for the wars in the pacific. just this week we brought in a world war ii 16-inch bottle ship gun to the marine head lands to put it up at battery townsly which would have been the pinnacle of coastal artillery in world war ii. so, we now have a canon or artillery collection that spans in our park that spans from the civil war to the cold war, including a preserve 19-missile base. some of you also know that during the 1906 earthquake, the army assisted greatly in the response to the city's needs. and the public flocked to the open lands at golden gate park and at the presidio, the open areas that they had there. the army provided tents and food for them during that transition period
