in the middle of june, 1988, a small fire ignited near yellowstone national park. it was the firstof many that summer that created the largest wildfire in the park' s history. the blaze would last for months charring a third of the two point two million acres and putting tourist areas in jeopardy. then on september 8, 1988, the park was shut down for the first time in its century existence.
