from 2000 to 2005 i was one of five historians who worked for the national park service developing a national historic site called the tuskegee site in tuskegee, alabama where the tuskegee airmen work. the national park service dedicated a significant amount of money to interviewing the surviving tuskegee mn to work those in to programs to find information museum architects needed as they were rehabing structures at the national historic site and create this repository of tuskegee history for when there will not just the tuskegee airmen to talk about what this experience was about. we recorded 826 oral history interviews and those interviews formed the core of this book. it is a narrative history of the experience. i tried to explain who and what were responsible for the remarkable changes african-americans in particular but american society as a whole went through in world war ii period. using the tuskegee airmen as an example. to explain what was responsible for that change and using the words of the tuskegee airmen themselves what was like to ride that change and i hope i have been

but if do you plan to go, the national park service is really recommending that you don't drive and that you instead take metro. but here is some information you need to know about metro. if you do plan on taking that today. it is going to be open from 7:00 a.m. until midnight. the smithsonian station is going to be closed until after the fireworks and then it will open back up. that way being people can flood out of here pretty quickly. they will be running six and eight-car trains to try to deal with the crowds. for safety measures, many of the escalators will not be on. they will have them turned off just for safety reasons. many people want to know what they can bring. in years past, some of these are very much the same. no grills, no alcohol, no glass bottles, no personal fireworks. you are allowed to bring coolers and backpacks down here. you will want to bring some water with you. but you will have to have that checked at any of the ten entrance marked by white tents. they will be searching those to make sure you don't have any of those things like alcohol, anything you shouldn't

"washington journal" continues. host: john jarvis is the national park's director. starting his term of servicek in 1976. and is here to talk to us about the state of america's national parks. back in april, when they were going through budget cuts, there was a budget cut with the national parks and a threat of government shut down. there was a concern about the impact on the national parks. bring us up to speed on what the current budget situation is with regard to national parks. guest: basically what happened leading up to the potential shut down, there was a concern about that time of year. spring when the parks were preparing for the ramp-up for the visitation. there was a fear the parks would be shut down. fortunately, we avoided that and in the final fiscal 2011 budget that was passed by congress and signed by the president, ultimately the park service did fairly well. there was a clear recognition by the appropriations leadership on that side that the parks are important to the american public and the economy. host: there's a headline in the july 4th edition of "u.s.a. today", the parks
