but if you're trying to lead a national party to have a message on immigration or other things. so there's a huge cleavage here. the party has to appeal to minorities, women, younger voters and they want to craft a message to do that. members of congress have different political dynamic. so some of this only gets resolved in the presidential primaries where you have the emergence of a candidate that can give shape toward repositioning of the republican party. >> ifill: and does the president's language count in this, too, when he talks about ladders of opportunity and he steps out of the way to allow the republicans to lead the way on immigration? why does that make you optimistic. >> >> i thought he was -- i thought he really talked about immigration in ways that would attract the president's support. he talked about in the terms of economic growth and competitiveness so he didn't throw down the gauntlet on any particular issue and i think the real issue this year -- >> ifill: except giving america a raise. >> but on immigration reform itself he didn't say "there has to be a pat

party. once a younger voter votes with a national political party twice in a presidential election, they are likely to vote that way for the rest of their life so we need to capture them now. these are two rounds of votes to president obama so we need to be sensitive to that. the biggest myth is that younger voters are liberal. they are not. there was some research that found that younger voters agree with us on size and scope of government. what they don't do is connect these fundamental values about spending and the size of government to the republican party brand. that's where we need to bridge that gap. [applause] >> you are the first asian-american woman elected in the arizona legislature and one of just a few in the entire country. what can the party do better to engage with asian voters across the country? >> there are 15 million asians in this country and growing. asian immigrants are the fastest growing ethnic group in the united states. what we are doing here on this stage today with our rising stars is the best start that we can do which is reach out to the various communities and

districts where they don't need to work about the latino vote to win, they don't care about the national partye we've seen some of the harshest rhetoric. while i think that's part of the strategy, let's keep the rhetoric down, see what's possible, but i think the clock is really running. >> is she right about that? is there a middle ground, hector, about people -- between people whose main concern is protecting the border and toss like you, who obviously don't disagree with that, but really have to think of it as an economic imperative? >> i agree with karen. i think it will be a challenging year. the soon el they get something done, the better. but look, there's a lot of exampling that people are working together across the aisle. luis gutierrez and paul ryan have had a lot of meetings. marco rubio, jeb bush, and others who have worked with their counterparts on the other side to get something done. i don't think it will be so unusual to see some bipartisanship here, but the sooner the better. >> i think the key issue will be convincing the groups if they end up with a piecemeal approach, tha

there you can have a european wide party the national party's that then once they get to strasbourg and align themselves into european blocks but you don't have a party that's present in every country in europe it has a pan european programme or platform that they get voted to the parliament to defend and to support. i think that i think that there could be steps that could be taken between the wood. in some ways and encourage the kind of political education across national boundaries. a lot of ways the very governments that are now creating some of these than national populace the political london. xd exploiting some of these in a populace that means are the ones they're also putting some checks announces on how widely spread of european political identity and can develop and trinkets at the end of the day the desert elections happening in may in this country. the party that tudor pole first is the far right national front. whisk in the future of europe and for those orange. yes and and today is not just in front is said and would win wimbledon little do the same daycare they will have

in kentucky, what does the primary challenger matt bevans tea party run mean, more broadly the national party in your state? >> well, you had asked the question do the democrats have to be careful when they attack the tea party. here in kentucky, it's the establishment republicans who may have to be careful when they do that. mitch mcconnell has gone on the offensive some against the tea party. he's gotten a lot of flak from the tea party for that. the tea party we really haven't seen what the strength is like here since the 2010 election with rand paul and that was a little bit of a different animal. rand paul had the built in following that his father had created here. and he had money that he doesn't have access to at this point. but mcconnell is -- needs to be careful that he doesn't anger the tea party so much that even if he wins the tea party, against the tea party or in the primary election, that they don't want to come back and vote for him. >> is that dynamic -- >> that's one of his biggest concerns? >> that dynamic that she brought up not -- those who are running for office, not at
