this is the national press club after all. is not the mike and mike show. here it goes. the economic downturn has placed tremendous stress on the already adversarial relationship between workers and their bosses. private-sector employees in the u.s. face increased global competition. public sector relations have been caught in a vise of budgetary crises. in both areas, a response has to be -- the response has been to attack workers' rights. to strip bargaining rights and to handicap private-sector workers who seek to organize. that is unfair. in part because our current difficulties were not caused by america's working men and women. such blame may be inevitable, but that does not make it fair. it is not true that municipal and state employees making $40,000 per year caused the present fiscal crisis. it is also unfair because depriving workers of their rights to organize and bargain deprives them of the only realistic leverage they have. it is ok and even laudable for political candidates or companies to have leverage because of their financial assets. it is ok to obtain

he made the announcement at the national press club here in washington, d.c. >> among the top findings, the presidential race very close. president obama has a narrow 46% to 42% lead over mitt romney in a trial heat towards the november the election. that's virtually unchanged from where quinnipiac had at any time last time at the end of february. not surprisingly president obama does very well among democrats, he gets 88% of self-identified democrats. mr. romney gets 83% of self-identified republicans. not surprisingly. independents interesting split for the republicans. 46% of independents say they would vote for mr. romney today, 39% of independents. now the reason why mr. obama is ahead is that there are more people that identify themselves as democrats these days than as republicans. so that's why the margin for the president exists. there's a very large gender gap, 10 points on mr. obama's side among women. women support the president 49% to 39%. whereas men support romney by a much narrower of 46% to 43%. so there is a gender gap. it's pretty large and obviously working to the p

let's turn to ben, national press secretary for obama 2012 campaign. ben, good to have you with us tonight. >> nice to be with you. >> this is really, i think, a big political opening for the democrats. all you have to do is look at their budget and see how many millions of people this will affect. your thoughts. >> budgets are about choices and values and who we are as a nation. you outline many of the devastating cuts not just for the poor but the middle class if we pass the romney-ryan budget. let's think about who he is protecting. he's giving special breaks to the wealthiest americans. another tax cut to millionaires and billionaires. $4 billion in subsidies to oil and gas companies and special tax breaks to hedge fund managers. the poor, the middle class, senior, veterans, the rest of us here in america are being saddled with the cost of this. >> he wants to cut, and it's the only way i can read it, he wants to cut veterans benefits. he wants to hurt seniors when it comes to medicaid because you know when you turn it over to the states and there'

first lady and a potential first lady of ann romney, and here is more with peter brown at the national press club here in washington. >> they asked voters whether they thought someone would be a good choice or a bad choice for romney on the vice presidency, and we gave them a large number of potential candidates. new jersey governor chris christie gets the highest grades on potential running mates for mr. romney. running second and third are florida senator marco rubio and wisconsin congressman paul ryan. not doing as well are people like virginia governor bob mcdonnell, ohio senator rob portman, new mexico governor sue susanna martinez and a variety of candidates and most not well known and even chrissy well known is still not known to half the electorate and still don't have a firm opinion. again, they're not as well known. interestingly, ann romney, mr. romney's wife, has a very strong approval rating although 7 out of 10 voters or almost 7 of 10 voters don't have an opinion about her because they don't know her that well. there is almost a 3 to 1 ratio of people that have an opinion and

the directors spoke of the national press club in washington. -- the director spoke at the national press club in washington. >> good morning. i served on the newsmaker committee here at the national press club. on behalf of the committee and the officers of the national press club, i want to thank all of you for coming out today. i also want to thank the reporters who are joining us on the phone as well as the audience joining us live this morning on c-span. our speaker this morning, josh gotbaum, will speak for tenor 15 minutes, and after that we will take questions. the press club invited him today because we live in airtime of retirement insecurity. for many, the golden years are not so golden. 10,000 people will retire every day for nearly the next two decades, but what kind of then, will they have in their -- income will they have in their retirement years? many baby boomers are without traditional pension plans. an economic downturn and a drop in housing prices has wiped out assets. those lucky enough to have defined benefit pension plans find them under pressure. our speaker today
