but yesterday, the national press club he tried to set the record straight. >> i have never sexuallyarassed anyone. and those accusations are totally false. >> reporter: the gop front runner denying any sexual harassment but according to a report by politico.com, two female employees made the complaints while cain ran the lobbying group here at the national restaurant association. well, at the national press club yesterday, he says he couldn't remember any complaint but changed his tune during the course of the day. >> one incident that i recall as the day has gone on, she was in my office one day. and i made a gesture saying -- oh and i was standing close to her. and i made a gesture -- you have the same height as my wife. and brought my hand -- didn't touch her. up to my chin and said you're the same height as my wife because my wife comes up to my chin. my wife of 43 years. >> i was talking to a source today who said that one of the women told him that herman cain invited her up to his hotel room and made sexually explicit suggestions to her that made her feel unconfidentable. tha

reporter: but at the national press club later cain offed his version of what did or did not -- offered his version of what did or did not happen. >> while at the restaurant association i was accused of sexual harassment. falsely accused i might add. reporter: at issue was a politico story claiming cain was sued by two women for inappropriate sexual behavior when he headed the national restaurant see, in the 1990s. cain -- restaurant association in the 1990s. cain said ole is unaware of a reported -- said i is unaware of a reported -- he is unaware of a reported five-figure settlement in the case. earlier cain had told fox news he believes the story which did not name his accusers was circulated to damage his presidential campaign. >> now obviously some people are going to be turned off by this cloud that someone wanted to put over my campaign. reporter: everywhere herman cain went in washington monday he was followed by a crowd at an event here at the national press club. it's been sold out for weeks, but these recent developments sent the room to capacity. wtop political analyst mark

cain's response at a lunch at the national press club -- >> i have never sexually harassed anyone andre totally false. >> reporter: but he did acknowledge he had been accused and investigated by the association. >> and it was concluded after a thorough investigation that it had no basis. as far as a settlement, i am unaware of any sort of settlement. i hope it wasn't for much, because i didn't do anything. >> reporter: that was his story at 1:00 p.m. later, in an interview on "the pbs news hour," cain elaborated. >> one incident with the one who made the formal charge, the only one that i could recall, after a day of trying to remember specifics, was once i referenced this lady's height and i was standing near her and i did this, saying, "you're the safe height as my wife," because my wife is five feet tall and she comes up to my chin. this lady is. obviously she thought that was too close for comfort. it showed up in the actual allegation. >> reporter: and tonight, speaking to fox news, cain contradicted his earlier remarks, saying he did recall details of a financial settlement of t

he spoke at the national press club. he spoke to judy woodruff of pbs. he is speaking with greta van sustern and more information is coming out as the day has gone on. this does not bode well for herman cain or his campaign because, as we have seen on really substantive issues, abortion, immigration, gay rights, there's one other that i can't think of right now at the moment, but he says one thing and has to backtrack or change what he said. when it comes to allegations of sexual harassment, either you remember or you don't and we are seeing, with our own eyes as the day has gone on that he didn't remember and keeps remembering one nugget of information after another as the day goes on. >> it certainly was a brilliant strath straj strategy for diverting all media attention from the campaign skanl daal of campaign finance which has been uncovered in wisconsin by the paper there. finding that all sorts of illicit funding, contributions, financial support has gone to the cain campaign. what reads to be in clear violation of federal election law, and this ca

. >> he said the same thing yesterday afternoon at the national press club and then a few hours after that he seemed to have changed his story. >> i was aware that an agreement was reached. the word "settlement" versus the word "agreement," you know, i'm not sure what that called it. i know that there was some sort of an agreement, but because it ended up being minimal, they didn't have to bring it to me. >> herman cain last night. his explanation which he repeated today and this evening, coming down to a question of words. an agreement which he remembered or a settlement he didn't. cain has been questioned about the politico story on sunday. most of yesterday, before he figured out that when reporters were asking him about a settlement, they were talking about what he refers to an agreement. and remember, the campaign was made aware of the politico story ten days before that. it happened a dozen years ago. it's also true that cain denies any wrongdoing and remembers only one woman and one complaint and saying i don't recall again and again about a lot of aspects of the story. >> nope

during an appearance at the national press club, he had denied there was a monetary settlement with an accuser. he didn't know anything about it. but later in an interview with fox news, kaine said he did know of at least one payout. two women received settlements after accusing kaine of sexual harassment back in the 1990s. he says he was cleared of any wrong doing. >> the voters in laurel, maryland, now have less than an hour to cast their ballots in the race for mayor. the polls close at 8:00 p.m. the mayor has two opponents. they are the former commissioner. and there's also a council race. >> a 12-year-old girl being hailed as a hero after a fire broke out at a district heights apartment complex. today, kristin fisher caught up with china campbell on what she says is the biggest day of her young life. >> october 27, 2:00 p.m., a kitchen fire was spreading through the apartment complex. 12-year-old china campbell saw the smoke and heard her neighbors screaming for help. >> i was shocked, scared. i didn't know what to do. that's when i realized i was supposed to call 911. >> prince g

[applause] >> hello. and welcome to the national press club and to another edition of the kalb report. i'm marvin kalb, and our guest tonight is lara logan, who is cbs news chief foreign affairs correspondent and a "request 60 minutes" correspondent as well. to state mere hi that lara logan has enjoyed a meteoric career is to understate the obvious. after working for a few newspapers in south africa where she was worn, she joined reuters television, then britain's i-tv before freelancing for fox and cnn. then in 2002 after reporting for cbs radio news, she joined the network itself, cbs news, and her career since then has skyrocketed. first, reporting on the war in iraq for the cbs evening news and "60 minutes ii," and then in 2006, only four years later, chef named foreign correspondent for cbs and a regular contributor to "60 minutes." during the egyptian revolution in early 2001, she was brutally assaulted and beaten while covering this tumultuous story,
