in response to that the national rifle association is now suing maryland's democratic governor wes moorenstitutional and maryland governor wes moore joins us now. governor in the wake of the supreme court's june 2022 decision, which was a ruling basically against new york's concealed carry law and basically ecpanded the interpretation of the second amendment. because of that the number of people now allowed to carry concealed guns in public in maryland has tripled. your new law is in response to that. the nra lawsuit challenges the idea maryland can prohibit legal permit holders from bringing their guns into a vast array of public and private space. do you think your law will hold up in court even if it's challenged all the way to the u.s. supreme court? >> i do think this law will hold up. we were working in partnership with the office of the attorney general who believes that this law will hold up. but also importantly these are common sense gun laws. they're common sense gun laws that are simply saying that people should not be allowed to bring firearms into a nursery or into a govern

you write a lot about this as being a very important inflection point in terms of the national rifle association and the transformation of that into a -- an organization you have now spent a lot of time fighting against. take us back to 1994. what happened? why has that become so important in the trajectory of this topic? >> is ryan -- brian: i have struggled like a lot of people to understand how we went from a childhood like i had hunting and shooting with my brother and grandfather and father on a ranch and responsibility around guns to where we are today. i think we have all struggled to understand how politics got from where they were 25 or 30 years ago to today. what i have realized through the writing of my book and my life and the industry the trajectories of both of those questions are the same. i look at the genesis of that as being 1994. that is the year the assault weapons ban passed. the assault weapons ban did not ban all ar-15's. you could start -- still by a lot of them. it banned semi-automatic rifle's with an additional list of features. it is a bit arcane and troublesome but i

texas, like you mentioned, i was in the state legislature, there is a subsidiary of the national rifle association, and thus the texas rifle association. they are going to do everything possible to stop us from ever putting just reasonable restrictions on the state house floor. again, just raising the age should be something that's easy. but texas, if you look at our history, we're actually going backwards when it comes to gun safety. you can actually walk into the state capital, if you have a concealed handgun license, and not go through the medical metal detectors. it's absurd. when they made that will change, i was just leaving the state house and going to congress, and all the lobbyist and the reporters -- coming through the capitol without going through the metal detectors. the lobbyist in -- just think about some of the people that we've seen that are dealing with mental issues, have a concealed handgun license that can just walk inside of the capitol. i think it's a perfect capital of how our state takes gun safety not seriously enough. i applaud, alex, those legislators that did the right

these latest mass shooting has once again drawn attention to the powerful gun lobby in the national rifle association. widely seen as the most significant barrier to the passage of gun restrictions. even those with broad public support like background checks. just hours after yesterday's mass shooting, the nra tweeted quote no organization in the world does more to promote safe and responsible use of firearms than the nra. joining me now is ryan bussey, former insider who left the gun industry after growing disillusioned with the nra's failure to consider and he kind control after mass shootings. he's also author of the book gunfight. my battle against the industry that radicalized america. ryan it's good to see you again and to speak with you. you were deep in this gun industry before quitting it altogether after serious a mass shootings. share with us a little bit about that part of your story and what ultimately caused you to rethink and reimagine this gun narrative in the country. >> thanks for having me, michael. i wish i was the one she today but here we are again. this terror that we're living

reforms, they were modest reforms, but they were nonetheless passed under the threat of national rifle association, most specifically their most powerful lobbyist or their most powerful lobbyist in that state but they did it altogether. it was some 64 of them, i don't remember the number. there's no way to politically punish that many people. so i think until the conversation becomes more focused in that regard, it's going to be harder -- it's going to continue to be possible to move the chains at the congressional or the federal level. >> yeah. you mentioned the federal level. the nra has had a host of problems, although i don't know about if michael steele would agree or not, i wouldn't know washington is the place that most quickly adjusts to new information or realities. >> no. >> so there can be a lag where a new cohort, new generation comes up with a different view of how scary it is politically. as for the state level where a lot of this does matter, michael steele, take a listen to what we are seeing and hearing out of these state debates. >> florida led the nation in allowing for conceale
