[applause] america's veterans inspire us all with the sacrifices they have made to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the united states. america's first and greatest veteran, george washington, understood the urgent importance of remembering the sacrifices of veterans and promoting civic education. in 1781, he pleaded to his friend, jonathan trumbull, on behalf of those veteran troops, had been so long and faithfully serving the states, he added every satisfaction which can reasonably be requested should be given to them. washington was similarly passionate about civic education. encouraging congress in 1796 to create a national university, washington said "a primary object of such a national institution should be education of our youth in the science of ."vernment recent studies confirm washington's insight that civic structures ofthe

veterans. earlier today -- [applause] earlier today, national park service staff rangers rang the centennial belltop independence hall 21 times as a highlight of programs to honor veterans, especially on the centennial of armistice day. they had to climb many stairs and a steep letter to the open air tower and tug on a big rope in unison with bells across the nation. the independence hall bell rang with others on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in honor of those who served in world war i, and indeed, all wars. today's bell tolling was a solemn nod in a program called "bells of peace" to mark the at 100th anniversary of armistice day. the cessation of fighting in 1918 in what was called the great war to end all wars. pictures of the streets and newspaper headlines i have seen from november 11, 1918 show jubilation and celebration at the promise of peace. indeed, philadelphia joined other cities again this year in hosting a parade last sunday, and national park rangers have enthralled thousands with special programs this weekend. the world war i centennial commission designated our

reservists are national guard veterans. they've served in combat and serve very honorably. mr. caldwell: my wife was an army reservist. important to note and recognize our national , thesmen and reservists days of one weekend a year are over. many of these individuals are training longer can we make sure they have access to benefit especially when they are spending large amounts of time on active duty. we need a strong reserve force reached on national guard. if you look at the wildfires in california a lot of national guardsmen's of owning those. there's been a consistent national guard presence. this is an important component of our armed services enemies reservist and national guardsmen reserve best deserve respect. host: as the use of guards on the border of good use of resources? mr. caldwell: if you look at the purpose of any military it is to protect the territory and integrity of the nation's borders. restricted ins performing certain law enforcement functions. the national guard and active-duty military there are some differences. there are times when the national guard
