deborah choe, thank you. >> ian: we were take something the national weather service -- speaking with the national weather service office in tampa and jacksonville and one of the threats to pass the interior part of florida was within the powerful bands, rotating storms and tornado potential. we got a new tornado warning, mostly for southeastern portions of polk county and includes a piece of hardy and highlands county. this is related to a strong band moving right across the spine of florida. this is across interior parts of the tampa bay area. it's moving off to the north at about 30 miles per hour. there you go. you've got the intense core of idalia about 100 miles off shore but you do see in these intense bands of core with a land falling tropical system, there's a lot of spin in the atmosphere and you can get the quick tornadoes that form. the national weather service office there in tampa bay has issued a tornado warning within that band. it's for the southern part of polk county, northern parts of highlands and hearty counties and runs until -- hardy counties and runs until 2:0

you mentioned the national weather service and the warnings that were given.e heeding these warnings when they're warned of the devastating storm surge that people now understanding what that means? >> well, two things, first is, i think that just based on what state officials and local officials have told us, there are always going to be people that stayed behind. i think that's true in taylor county. the good news is they know who these people are and where they live, the bad news, they get in trouble out there, no one is going to be able to get to them for quite some time. it's still listed as an experimental model, but they're relying more and more on it, it's the ability to predict storm surge. it's building into the way that we forecast these storm and is the way we advertise them to the public. for the first time hurricane seen, i've seen local outlets go to the storm surge projection before they go to the wind cone. i think that's encouraging. the wind is a dangerous thing. but it's that storm surge that i don't think was built into the way we analyze

all of us here just got an alert from the national weather service, this part of san bernardino now under a flash flood warning. the national weather service call thing a very dangerous situation, telling residents not to be out on the roadways unless you are evacuating, based on authorities telling you to do so. where we are here as we look over to the side, this is the base of the san bernardino mountains. this whole mountain is under a mandatory evacuation because of the sign over my shoulder here really says it all. this area, prone to mud and debris flows from recent burns. we're going to walk very slowly, because the wind is coming in rapid bursts here. you can see behind me, some of these burn scars. this is what has fire department officials so concerned. in past years, this whole area was subjected to wildfire. what that means is that will significantly change the landscape here should water start rushing down the mountains, down to the lower areas. officials tell us they're very concerned. i spoke not long ago with the battalion chief of the san bernardino fire department said l
