this is jeremy simon senior vice president of conservation and education programs for the national wildlife federation and jeremy welcome thanks for having me on the show what happened in durban i gave a bit of a summary there but well like you said i mean it is a missed opportunity in the long history of missed opportunities and i think the clip you showed says it all when your first guest joshua was it was when the climate negotiations first start started josh was two years old. and here we are almost twenty years later with an agreement to try to try to forge a new treaty and i'm going to have an agreement in three years you know you when you make a call to the fire station you expect them to just come in we have we have a five alarm fire going on in this planet and the clock is ticking it at some point you kick that can down the road long enough that it goes off the edge of the cliff you can't just keep doing that keep postponing were the united states china and india are the principal opponents of doing anything or was this pretty universal to all of the oil producing or carbon producing nations

i know you've been on board on the national wildlife federation and bard holdings and i appreciate what you're doing in some investment, i know some companies in houston are doing some investment in algae in louisiana and other locations and that may be something we can do many years from now. but we've heard testimony today from a number of folks about the safety issue. and right now like north dakota does, they have to truck out all their crude oil they produce in north dakota because there's no pipeline. has the national wildlife association or the apollo license have they done anything from the safety in tanker cars on rail or trucking, oil out as compared to a pipeline? 'cause we've heard that 87 times likely to have an accident if you truck it out and i don't know what it is for rail cars. but i know everything i've learned all these years is that it's so much safer to be in a pipeline than it is on a tanker truck on the road or even a tank car on a train. do you know if the wildlife federation -- i know it's not the first time we've gone over sensitive wetlands, for example? >> s

the national wildlife federation celebrated its 75th anniversary in the year 2011 and here with somesky, a natural with the nwf. what was the mission statement when this organization was founded? >> pretty much the same it is today to protect wildlife for our children's future. 75 years we've been doing that, hope to do it for 75 more years and with the help of americans we can do that to protect animals. these are animals from all over the world. is a prehensile tailed porcupine. he comes from brazil. these guys live up in the trees. they use the tail which is almost like a fifth limb, they can hold onto things with this. >> do other porcupines do not have a prehensile tail? >> they do not. the north american porcupine in the states do not have that. >> he looks like he's a vegetarian. >> he's an herbivore and chomping on sweet potato. >> the quills, are they dangerous? >> they're gorgeous. >> unless they stick in you. >> you notice i'm not touching him, the quills will stick in my hands. it's a form of protection. they cannot shoot them, a lot of people think porcupines can fling t

federal waters along the port's jurisdiction. we are consulting with both the united states fish and wildlife service and the national marine fisheries service to look at impacts on endangered species listed at the federal level. national historic preservation act compliance with respect to historic resources. the state lands commission will weigh in on dredging activities in some of the waterfront areas through adoption of the lease. the regional water quality control board takes a number of actions with respect to the event. there is section 401 water quality certification. there are construction permits, storm water pollution prevention plans, etc. california department of fish and game is looking at impacts -- potential impacts on state listed species, and the bay area air quality management district will have to act on some construction-related air permits. there are non-construction- related promotions that are required at the federal level as well. these are principally the park service through ggnra and san francisco maritime historic park approving the use of the field and aquatic park as primary event locations. presidio tr
