so back in october, the smithsonian national zoo welcomed the pair of three year old giant pandas, bao lee and xin bao. this is about one year after the zoo's three previous pandas were returned to china when the zoo opened at 8 a.m. eastern time this morning, the new pandas made their official debut. the zoo actually plans to relaunch its giant panda cam so that people can see the two in their enclosure, and the assistant curator says that the pandas are coming to work. special making. it's been amazing to see the kind of things that we've been able to do with pandas. they're amazing animals, and every day they're doing something adorable, and it makes coming to work every day pretty special, i would say so. meanwhile, there's still talk about bringing pandas to the san francisco zoo, but it's getting a little more hazy now that london breed is no longer the mayor. the zoo is also currently under new scrutiny over the care of its animals, but the chronicle cites a recent internal report indicating that funding may come from a zoo contractor and the city run fund facility investment in

watching for over the next several years with these pandas you know, the primary point and again, national zoo is the first zoo to have pandas back. >> and it started the panda diplomacy back in 1972. so it's exciting that these loan relationships and this panda diplomacy has been carrying on, because it really has helped pandas as a species. pandas are a very charismatic, very iconic animal, especially when you think of wildlife conservation. i mean, most people, when they think of endangered species or conserving wild animals, they think of the panda. so it's amazing that all this research is going to be, you know, obviously studying their behavior and some of their breeding and, and other aspects of their, of their just general care and husbandry. but you know what? that is what has helped pandas pretty much come back from the brink of extinction. they're considered more of a vulnerable species now rather than an endangered species. and a lot of that, you know, we attribute a lot of that to the work that's being done in china, but also here in the united states and other parts of the world.
