mark tercek is ceo of the nature conservancy and author of "nature's fortune." good to have you on the program. >> it's great to be herere, mar. >> really an interesting resume you have. you spend 25 years on wall street before taking the helm of the world's largest largest conservation organization. what are you trying to do? >> at the nature conservancy, our mission is to save the lands and waters that land depends on. it's kind of hard to be against that. the question is how can we get done more, aster. so at the nature conservancy and in my book, we are arguing you can think of nature as an investment opportunity, natural capital. if you think about it that way, it's really the smartest investment we can make there are a lot of win-win opportunities, and we're trying to get government, business, you know, more of society on the side of environmentalists for practical reasons. >> so make the case. how does it prove the bottom line? >> well, take a company like dow chemical. they're one of our partners. andrew is our partner, smart guy. hehe knows me. he said

the nature conservancy stepped up and we got a crew of six volunteers, and documented 28 miles of salmon stream. so we'll nominate this, and now if people want to muck around in here, there will be restrictions on how they can do it. but this will be impacted. how much? we're not sure until we have an idea what they're going to do and what the plans are. >> narrator: the company says it's too early to show real plans, but there are preliminary drawings on file with the securities and exchange commission. what they describe is an open pit mine that could become two to three miles wide, and a mile deep. it would become one of the largest open pit mines in the world. next to it, a tailings dam will rise 700 feet high, covering several square miles and able to hold billions of tons of mining waste. and as mining continues, another tailings dam will be needed. they would be among the largest man-made structures on earth. >> it's going to be, probably, at least a $7 or $8 billion investment just to get us up and running. >> narrator: john shively became ceo of the pebble partnership in 2008. h

paulson was not only the ceo of goldman sachs, he was also the chairman of the nature conservancy. paulson's son was a trustee of the wildlife conservation society, the group that picked up the acreage. that was only the tip of the iceberg. we learned the whole sordid history of this tract of land and its nightmarish intersection with sustainability. the land had been purchased by a washington state timber company named trillium. the ceo of that company turned out to be rather green for a timber company ceo. he had purchased the 800,000 acres nine years earlier to save it from a japanese purchaser who wanted to clear-cut the land and sell the wood. trillium outbid the japanese, bought the land for $200 million, and announced it intended to do the world's first sustainable logging project. trillium hired respected foresters to develop a plan that was hailed by conservationists as visionary. conservationists are distinct from environmentalists. in short, trillium said it would harvest only a small portion of the trees and put some parts of the tract permanently off limits to logging.

one is, there is a very strong fiscal conservative argument to be made for investing in predisaster mitigation in these communities. when the natural disaster does strike, communities are more prepared. there is less damage and it is ultimately less costly. as you're pointing out, these natural disasters are coming at a much more rapid pace. the center for american progress did a great report that looked at the number of billion dollar plus weather events. this is adjusted for inflation. it was two per year on average. now it is ten per year. and part of why we keep having to go back and appropriate more money is because we don't have a clear picture even of how much we are spending on disaster relief in a year. which is another thing that this report did. they compiled how much we are spending to give a number. like this is what we are spending on disaster relief. we need to be smarter about investing up front. i compare it to our health care system. this is what we have in health care. where people are waiting to the last minute. going to the emergency room when it is critical, rather than those smart investments along the way. i
