the naval academy must be a cornerstone of a value based naval culture of dignity and mutual respect. that includes improving sexual assault prevention efforts and continuing to strengthen support for victims. there's continued work to be done at the naval academy so that we can attract, maintain, and develop navy officers who are resilient, innovative, and equipped to lead in a highly diverse, socially complex and multi generational workforce. lastly, we remain vigilant of the long term existential threat that climate change and sea level rise pose to our continued operations here in annapolis. we've studied the science. we've implemented several resiliency projects, and we are in the process of formulating a military installation resiliency plan that's due to be completed at the end of this calendar year. for 175 years, the naval academy has met its mission for our nation. however, we still faced many challenges ahead. i believe the top-notch team of senior leaders, faculty, and staff, are prepared to meet those challenges using the same ingenuity, flexibility, and adaptability that

on a soggy november 18th, in 1972, the naval shipyard in california, the u.s.s. support ship, was re-commissioned. the navy's first woman admiral, gave the commission. >> the sanctuary is being re-commissioned as a new and unusual type of ship, with a new mission to assist the navy's effort to improve morale, and possibly of home parties, by combatant ship overseas. the ship will provide medical, and resale services, to deploy dependents wherever the fleet may be assigned. in addition, to this forward step, the sanctuary has also been selected, as you know, as the ship to participate in the pilot program, which will evaluate the utilization of women, for ship or duty. it will be home for about 80 women. half in the crew, and half of the hospital. with these innovations, you can see that the sanctuary is truly unique in many respects >> the sanctuary is an experiment to see how well women and men can work together at sea. it is also a symbol of the navy's changing view towards women. in the navy, equal rights, means equal opportunity. ♪ ♪ ♪ however women in the na

i remember being shocked fairly early on when i was teaching at the naval academy asking them handing out a blank map the united states and ask him to find her is places on it. someone couldn't find the state of south carolina. where the war began which led me to begin giving geography quizzes in a history class to which one of my colleagues responded geographies about maps histories about chaps. but i kept doing it anyway because i think it helped them picture things. in fact when i got into this section of the course where i did military maneuvers, i'd put a map up on a whiteboard by projection and then use colored markers to follow the movements around and they seem to find that quite enlightening. so that's one way and here's one other way. i think things change over the 30 years. i talked there thinking about what i would say today in our conversation. i went down to my basement and pulled out some old grade books and shocked myself to discover that in the late 1970s. my course average. this is for an upper level course of an elective course at history majors took my average grad
