what do you make of navalny's suggestion?it look like, such a campaign, if he had his way? what might that look like? >> well, look, alexey navalny, you know, my goodness, he is already in a russian penal colony, and he is communicating with us, and he has found a way around russia's censorship and its sort of new iron curtain. so obviously it is possible. i do think that's one of the points, right, is the new iron curtain is not the same information wise as the old iron curtain. it is clear that certain information and tools are available to those who have vpns inside of russia just as inside of iran or north korea, or china, right. so it's possible to get information now in a way that wasn't the case in the past. but how do you crack the mentality of people that has been fed propaganda, not just in the last few months of the war, but for years really. and that i think is no easy task. >> how much influence do you think he has, navalny, and how much reach inside russia? how is he viewed there? >> well, you know, it does spea

and what alexey navalny offers is an alternate vision of what russia could be.d freedom of expression and rule of law. and so many of these virtues we take for granted in the west. >> daniel, one thing that comes across in the film so powerfully is that this is a family battle here. his wife, yulia, daughter dasha, they are right in the middle of it. it was such a pleasure to meet them with you and it is inspiring to meet them. describe how they managed this, right, because they got to go on, while their husband and father remains in prison. >> absolutely, jim. i think one of the best compliments i've received about the film so far is someone came up to me after a screening and told me how shocked they were that it was a love story at the center of this film is a love story between alexey navalny's wife and their family, and what i still find remarkable is the unwavering, unflappable support that alexey's family has for him. it is like the entire family has this iron spine, their character is extraordinary and i think his strength, the foundation for his strengt

i think poisoning up navalny and all the stuff 2020 was preparation for that because navalny has millionssupporters in russia, he is -- has emerged as the most prominent opposition politician. he has a capable and well if he thinksing political organization. so it is natural that putin would like to get him behind bars. >> is it possible to even have an opposition, a credible opposition, in russia today? is there any semblance of a credible opposition in russia today? >> opposition in terms of a political party or political movement? no, i don't think that's possible. the last independent media outlets have been closed. people get detained even from going to the streets with posters that just say "no war," but all the letters are replaced with asterisks or with just a -- stories of war and peace, and people get penalties for that. so it's not possible to have, you know, no formal opposition now. but the dissent, the dissolutionment of russian people is growing, and it will result in a political crisis and a wave of mass protests sooner or later. >> you said that last year before russia in

alexei navalny, subject of a fascinating documentary you can watch tomorrow. what impact russian disinformation is having on the russian people. m the united states is looking into not only seizing the assets of oligarchs but actually selling off some assets or reappropriating financial assets and giving them to ukraine to help fight this war. is that something you support? and it's obviously a big step for the u.s. it would be a major change in policy. >> it's not a step that should be taken lightly. it's one thing to freeze assets of people who got under sanctions, but it's another thing to confiscate private property without a proper judicial procedure. there has been legislation put in place in the u.s. that would allow the u.s. executive to take these steps, but the procedure is still going to be worked out. and i think as in any procedure, where private property is taken from somebody, there should be, you know, a court procedure, defense, prosecution, and people should be able to defend themselves. >> it could have ripple effects. i mean, it may be sati
