casualties were 22 navy seals. here's the latest from kabul. >> reporter: the american and afghan special forces were working side by side when the operation took a deadly turn. a senior american official says the team was on its way to a mission not far from kabul. a volatile veej known for its strong taliban presence. their target, a taliban compound housing insurgent fighters. soon the ch-47 chinook helicopter came under fire and crashed, killing everyone on board. in operations like this one, helicopters can be vulnerable. >> this helicopter, like any helicopter, can go fast in a straight line but when it is over a target area, when it is inserting itself into a target area, it is slow. it is a very easy target for enemy troops on the ground. >> reporter: the 38 people killed include 22 u.s. navy seals, five army air crewebb men, seven afghan special forces and an interpreter. a dog was also killed. the u.s. navy seals were from at least two different units and included some from seal team 6, the unit involved

these two navy seals are about to be memorialized for their service. they have bay area connections. and first, as for the crash, it happened saturday, in eastern afghanistan. reports say there were 30 american troops. and eight afghan service members aboard that chinook helicopter. they were going on a one-night mission to apparently help army rangers stuck in a fire fight. but the initial belief is that insurgents launched a rocket-propelled grenade that hit and took down that helicopter. it is now the deadliest day in afghanistan for american troops since the war began nearly 10 years ago. the taliban has already claimed responsibility for it. now, on that helicopter was derrick benton. he grew up in a small napa county town called anguin about 30 miles northeast of santa rosa. his hometown paper describes him as a low key person who dreamt of being a navy seal. he did eventually become one of only 19 to attain that elite status out of the 209 who enrolled in the navy at the time. his high school principal says the school's web site will feature a s

and i would also say that the arctic is getting a lot of attention in the navy. about three years ago we established a task force on climate change on not just to address the arctic but the changes that will take place around the planet and how those affect the maritime domain. where will it induce potential sources of conflict, where will they provide potential areas of cooperation. but the arctic is one that we have had significant focus on these past couple of years. and i think initially, as i see it, the first press up in that region will be for fishing as the fish follow the colder water and go up there. and this will then lead to questions of how do you monitor and how do nations enforce their rights and the regimes in the arctic areas. there will also likely be increased search and rescue activities. so the question that was posted earlier, can you use unmanned systems to enhance your ability to sense and respond to search and rescue as you get into the next of which i think is going to be the exploration and mineral extraction and oil and gas extraction,
