limited navy. today, things have changed a little bit. some of the things that allen talked about. today, we have two hundred 86 ships in our battle fleet -- we have 286 ships in our battle fleet, over 3000 aircraft and 9000 people. we have a budget north of $150 billion. but the numbers do not tell the story. what i would like to do is spend just a few minutes doing what i call navy and marine corps 101. what do we do? why do we need a date -- why do we need a navy? why do we need a marine corps into a's world? we are everywhere. if we are doing our job, we are usually somewhere far from home. we are in combat today, in the things that you see and what you report on day after day. the more than 19,000 marines in afghanistan. there are also, today in the middle east, in iraq and afghanistan, 12,000 sailors on shore, doing things like running provincial reconstruction teams and doing counter-ied duty. we have more and sailors on the ground there and we do at sea. we also have ships off the horn of a

[laughter] >> today is a navy birthday. 212 years ago today, congress authorized the department of the navy. it was a pretty different place and organization from the navy of today. then, the navy only had three commissioned units, the united states, the constellations, and the constitution, still in service in the boston naval shipyard. we had a tiny navy, and one that had never fought. since the revolution, the navy had been pretty quiet. you could make a pretty good argument that the reason why america changed from the articles of confederation to the constitution that we have today was because we could not field a national maybe. that was one main impetus of getting together in philadelphia in 1789. in 1798, then secretary of the navy, -- the then secretary of the navy, had three ships, very few squadrons of marines to sell on the ship, and it was a regional maybe. today, things have changed a little bit. some of the things that allen spoke about, today, we have 286 ships in our b

navy seal, second navy seal has been found not guilty in connection with the alleged beating of a terrorpect. now all eyes are on the third seal. his name is matthew mccabe. malini wilkes is in studio and following the story. >> reporter: good afternoon. his attorney hopes the charges against matthew mccabe, the third navy seal will be dropped. this week at camp victory in iraq, petty officer second class jonathan keefe and petty officer first class julio huertas were found not guilty of failing to protect a prison. matthew mccabe's style will start may 3 in norfolk, virginia. he is the only one of the seals accused of assaulting the terrorist ahmed hashim abed after his arrest last september. mccabe's attorney thinks the previous acquittalals shows the case against his client is weak. >> i have been practicing military law for 26 years and when there are codefendants in a case, often if the case is tried once or twice with negative results for the government, they often choose to drop the charges against the additional member. just to save judicial resources and government money. >> rep

another navy seal was cleared of similar charges just yesterday. centanni has been covering this for us, he's in d.c. tell us what happened today >> reporter: we've had at least three witnesses and the trial continues. the prisoner himself who claims he was beaten, he testified, a navy petty officer who says he saw the beating, and julio hoursas -- huertas, who was found not guilty in the case yesterday. this is the trial of petty officer second class jonathan keefe of new yorktown, virginia. they don't want his picture shown because it's in special operation. use accused of dereliction of duty. he's chose to go have the case heard by the judge and there won't be a jury as in the case of julio huertas. jane: and huertas was found not guilty. does that mean the possibility of acquittal is pretty high for the others? >> reporter: it's possible. the biggest concern would be for matthew mccabe, he's the navy seal actually accused of punching the prisoner in the stomach. mccabe's attorney says the case has been laid out in the trial of huertas and in th

within the past couple of month, the navy grabbed a half-dozen pirates and had them aboard a u.s.r several weeks until they had to release them, without any charges, because nobody apparently would take them in. the u.s. has had an agreement with kenya, but apparently kenya felt there was in sufficiesuffi evidence against these individuals to take them through their legal system. ultimately, they say the problem has to be solved by going ashore in somalia, improving conditions there and eliminating the pirate camps that thrive in that ungoverned space. that will not happen any time soon so u.s. officials acknowledge eliminate iing pira is not going to happen any time soon. >> is this now official operate ing procedure for the united states navy on the high seas or that the american public don't hear about or for lack of a better term, they're on pirate patrol all the time? >> they are, hundreds of miles to the north in the gulf of aden, where they usually operate, a very busy shipping lane, many of those cargo ships were very vulnerable to attacks by pirates. there have been two d
