they were really a brown water navy. a navy stable to operate in shallow water. mak chose the chinese efforts to be able to expand their capabilities into blue water. >> if these technologies are lost, then it means we don't have that edge. so, god forbid, if there's ever a conflict in the pacific that involves china with us on the other side, then i believe lost technology will cost u.s. lives. and that's one of the things that makes me angry. >> in the fbi we have to follow principles, policies and laws. and one of those is we have to have the evidence. our greatest fear initially was, will we catch chi mak doing what we thought he was already doing? >> the thing that hit me hardest about this case was that we've got a man who came here for better opportunity and, in fact, was a spy. sent by china to come here, pledge allegiance to the united states. he took an oath with a full intention of betraying it. he lived in this country for decades and was able to put in danger members of our military. there was a lot of pressure on all of us. i wanted to stop that lea

the navy also had a great deal of power. there were rival factions within the services, and the two services were essentially at each other's throats nonstop for control of the national budget, military and foreign policy. essentially the japanese needed oil. they had relied on texas crude. they have imported about 90% of their oil to run their economy china.run there were on as our relations deteriorated, we essentially cut off all oil exports. that created a crisis. the japanese needed to replace that source. in order to do that, they were determined to take the netherlands east indies, which we today call indonesia, where there were productive oil fields. in order to take those territories, they essentially decided they needed to preventively strike us at pearl harbor to clear the way for that invasion. host: this is american history anniversaryial 75th program on the attack of pearl harbor. we are talking with ian toll with his book "pacific crucible." we looking for your calls as well. we look forward to your comments o

or the navy called them smbs. and they had various other planes that they specifically trained them to use the bomb sites and to drop torpedos and to drop the bombs and do whatever else they did. but they had their own specific training program, and then they all came together when they were assigned to their airplane or their unit. the tbm was involved in quite a few. the turkey chute, this particular airplane was the type that george h.w. bush ditched and was flying when he was rescued out of the pacific. so that is what kind of helped to make this airplane famous as well. this was the premiere navy fighter, as everyone knows, the corsair, an f 4 u was the particular designation, but this particular model was an fg-1 d. and f-1 fighter, g, good year, and just look general motors and others. this one has folding wings just like all the other airplanes and being a navy fighter, has an r-21 engine, very big. most people recognize this airplane because of its bent wing. that is its own look, the reason they do that

the air force and the navy had them. the navy had some with tail hooks on them. if you ended up going on a carrier, you do some carrier training. chairman's -- in instruments and their. use them to do strafing runs and machine gun work and bombing maneuvers. the advanced part of the training could go in many different or action so it was used for a lot of things after you learn how to fly. then how to fly something faster and more advanced that you would be getting into after you left here. was primarily used for training but later in the war, ,hey did use some for combat not very many. they armed some and use them at have a specific purpose in short range, low altitude bombing and strafing for a specific need. in general, it was used for training. now sits in the back and the student sits in the front. it would be just like you were sitting in a fighter by yourself and flying the fighter type airplane. you learned everything you would do in a fighter in this. , it would becs more fighter like so you can learn how to do combat and be comfortable during whatever y
