lester holt talked with the real life navy s.e.a.l. who survived that mission. >> we're heading back. >> reporter: it is not just a war movie. not for marcus latrell. >> you have to understand, i went through it in real life. >> reporter: certainly not for the families of those who didn't come home like lieutenant michael murphy's mom. >> i saw the first 30 minutes. my other son he went over and tapped me and said, okay, mom, this is where you have to leave. >> reporter: marcus played by actor mark wahlberg was the only member of a four-man navy s.e.a.l. element to survive after they were compromised during a mission to hunt down a taliban commander. when goat herders came upon their hideout, the choices were to kill them for their own security or free them, knowing they would alert local insurgents. >> when it goes bad it usually goes real bad. we made a decision to turn them loose, turn them loose and deal with the consequences. >> reporter: sadly outnumbered, the s.e.a.l.s were hunted down and killed one by one battling to the end.

a former navy s.e.a.l. welcome to all of you now.come to abc, you were in afghanistan during this operation, and this wasn't the history of afghanistan, they have dominated. was this film true to the experience? >> i would say it's very true and it's very graphic, as you know, i would tell you a more important issue is the dilemma this presents for the special operations community who always prided them on being the quiet professionals. while the story has to be told about these brave men they also want to protect their capabilities for future mission. this movie does that. but it's very graphic and will be a painful experience, not only for the families who have lost members due to this war but also those worry about their members every day. >> this navy s.e.a.l.s ethos, i don't advertise the nature of my work. clearly happening here, bringing people inside that experience. >> extraordinary stories that are being told here. the people who have been fighting this war for us overseas. so, what we see here is something that the admiral

now the movie version of the navy s.e.a.l.d "lone survivor," number one in the box office, making more than $38 million in its the opening weekend. now, the s.e.a.l.s were supposed to find out whether or not a senior taliban target was inside afghanistan. but what happened, they were ambushed by taliban forces. the only one of them, marcus latrell, survived. "lone survivor" is now based on the book latrell wrote about the whole ordeal. jake tapper sat down to talk with latrell and mark wahlberg, who plays him in the movie. take a listen. >> reporter: marcus, it must have been a difficult decision to let them make a movie. how close is it to what happened? >> i would say it's as close as you can possibly get without having killed some of these guys up on the mountain filming it. the most important thing is whether or not the family members of the fallen appreciate what they saw on the film. >> reporter: what do they think? >> from my understanding, everything was positive. and that's all you can ask for? >> reporter: one of the
