we begin with ktvu's maureen naylor at hayward city hall, where the community came together tonight for a candlelight vigil. >> the vigil ended about an hour and a half ago. the flags here have been lowered, and the candles are lit at this hour for a man who went to work today, never knowing he would not return home. it was difficult to keep the candles lit at wednesday night's vigil. the mayor said hayward lost a life with the death of sergeant lunger. a sentiment echoed by others. >> a loss all the way around. >> reporter: the pain was visible on the face of the dozens who attend the vigil, from strangers to colleagues. i'm stunned just as everyone else here in hayward. >> reporter: with the flags at half staff, a show of support from law enforcement and the community outside hayward city hall. >> he made you feel good, and he always used to say, you be safe out here. that makes me feel good, you know. >> reporter: people young and old wrote handwritten notes to sergeant lunger's family, and the hayward police department. >> i went to hayward this morning to see if i could help comfor
