nbc's tracy potts has a preview for us from washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. israel, iran, syria, lib non, libya, of course. it is all expected to come up at that debate tonight. the debate is going to look a lot different, as we take a look at the debate preps in boca raton, florida. both candidates will be seated tonight. no props, no notes or anything like that. and they've got six 15-minute segments where they'll talk about the war in afghanistan, america's role in the world, and of course, the middle east and the new face of terror as it's described by the moderator, bob schieffer, who chose those topics. expect president obama, who was at camp david over the weekend preparing for this, to talk about whether or not governor romney is ready. he's got a new ad out insisting that the governor is not ready for primetime when it comes to national security. he will also probably talk about the governor's quick reaction to the deaths in libya. meantime, governor romney, very likely to talk about the inconsistencies

and let's look at our new nbc/wall street journal poll. there are two numbers that matter more when judging whether a president wins re-election or not. it's his job approval rating and where people see the direction of the country. for the president right now, his job approval rating is at 49%. disapproval at 48. our pollsters tell us that 49 is in the re-elect zone. now, look at this, direction of the country. 40% say we're on the right track. that 40% is not a great number, but it's actually the highest number we've recorded in three and a half years. let's move to the head-to-head with mitt romney. this is where the race has tightened a bit. the president's number is steady at 49. mitt romney has picked up a couple in the last couple weeks, sits at 46. what's helping him? republican voters more enthusiastic, they make it through the likely voter screen. it's been a couple tough weeks for mitt romney. that 47% mark has left a mark, if you will. when we asked, is there anything you've heard in the last few weeks that made you more favora

nbc's tracie potts has the latest from washington. tracie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. less than a week away from this campaign and governor romney is now cautiously venturing back onto the campaign trail. president obama still really tied up with dealing with the storm. so the campaign is back on sort of. we've got paul ryan who is back out in wisconsin today. vice president biden in florida, and so is governor romney. he's got three stops in florida today. he was in ohio yesterday collecting supplies and thanking supporters for helping those storm victims and also avoiding questions about fema, the federal emergency management agency and their response to the storm. meantime, president obama probably won't be back on the campaign trail until tomorrow in colorado at the earliest. today, as you mentioned, he's visiting new jersey and getting a pat on the pack from new jersey governor chris christie who says the president has done an outstanding job so far with the recovery effort after the storm. meantime, the pres

i'm jeff ranieri in the nbc bay area weather center. we're tracking another system that is now starting to push into northern california with plenty of wet weather. of course we're on storm watch as the giants and the cardinals go at it for tonight. do expect a chance of showers if you're still headed that way with temperatures in the 50s. >>> a new era under way at yahoo, and so far so good for the company's latest ceo. scott budman is tracking the numbers from yahoo and wall street's reaction to it as well. scott? >> reporter: jessica, the reaction to this earnings report has been positive. and we haven't been able the say that about yahoo since it announced its latest choice for ceo that is former google exec marissa meyer. this afternoon she led investigators through a pretty strong earnings call. yahoo's numbers came in ahead of expectations. she says she is proud of the team she has been putting into place and is just starting to make yahoo into a better company. investors pushing stock up by about 5% in after-hours trading. >>> a

nbc's tracie potts has the details for us from washington. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. they are really focusing on the swing states in the final two weeks before the campaign. governor romney and paul ryan in colorado at a rally there talking about why they feel they're close to winning this election. the governor saying those debates super charged his campaign. he's in a virtual tie now in all the major polls. he said the president is slipping. today governor romney will be in nevada, in reno, cedar rapids, and romney in tampa, lakeland and winter park, florida, making three stops there. paul ryan will be in cleveland, ohio. meantime a 20-page booklet outlining what he says is his plan for the next four years, 3.5 million copies. the president said at this event in ohio with vice president biden yesterday that the math in his plan adds up. he's got eight different states he's hitting in the next three days. he'll be today in iowa, colorado, california for a quick stop to take the leno show and nevada. vice presiden

. >> nbc bay area news starts now. >> good evening. i'm diane dwyer, and thanks for joining us for this special edition of nbc bay area news. we'll bring you complete coverage of the bay's big weekend in just a moment, but we begin tonight with a heartbreaking story on the peninsula. a minivan hit and killed a 6-year-old girl in a parking lot of a church today. her mother and one other adult was also injured at st. andrew's catholic church in daly city. kimberly tere joins us from daly city with more for us. >> reporter: diane, you can see the markers left on the ground by investigators who were here for hours in this parking lot. the accident happened just before 9:00 this morning, just as mass was about to begin, and catechism for the kids was getting under way. so witnesses say the parking lot was very busy. according to daly city police, a woman in her 50s driving a minivan hit a mother, her child, and another woman. all three victims were taken to san francisco general hospital where the 6-year-old girl died. the two women, one 45

[laughter] >> host: just a few months before comcast bought a lot of nbc. do you feel fully integrated? >> guest: i don't know that we're fully integrated, but i think we feel very comfortable with the asset and with the level of integration between the two companies. they're, obviously, very different businesses, very different companies, and steve burke had a great vision going in that he wanted to bring the best parts of the comcast culture and the comcast management culture but respect the differences between the companies and the unique, you know, some of the unique approaches and cultures of nbc universal as being an entertainment and a content and a news and an information company as opposed to a distribution company. and i think, i think steve's been able to execute that balance, um, almost perfectly. in bringing the parts of the company together that need to be brought together, but in respecting the differences between the companies and allowing the two companies sometimes to function in accordance with their historic practice and culture. >> host
