nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live. kris, this bold move is to push increased safety and social distancing. >> reporter: yeah, well, this is something oakland city mayor libby schaaf says they had been talking about, thinking about, but this seems like the perfect time to make it happen, to open up the streets to pedestrians, people on bikes and in wheelchairs but also to get drivers to slow down, especially with all these people out on the roadway. to be clear, oakland's slow streets is not to close any city streets, rather to limit traffic to locals only on certain residential streets and quarters. that means if you're driving in your own neighborhood, maybe getting a delivery to your home, those are okay, that is local only. this will apply to 74 miles of oakland streets, as you mentioned. that's 10% of the city's roadways. >> we're taking this opportunity to try some new things. oaklanders are very anxious right now, and really trying hard to adjust to a radically different reality. and we hope that this slow street
