nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live.y council is going to vote on incentives to hire new police officers so what's the rub? >> well, good morning, kris. there are currently 60 vacancies in the oakland police department for officers. these are funded positions that have not yet been filled, and what the city council wants to do is get those positions filled as soon as possible with veteran officers from other police departments, not with rookies coming out of the police academy. as you can see in the live stream, the oakland city council is meeting virtually right now. they are taking public comment on this issue and we expect them to then vote on this emergency legislation and you're asking what would the incentive be? to approve $50,000 hiring bonuses to entice those veteran officers to leave their departments and come work for oakland immediately. right now opd has only 676 sworn officers. that is a decade low number, according to the mayor. it's also in violation of voter approved measure z which requires at least 678

nbc bay area sergio quintana has been monitoring the situation for us.alking illinois, arkansas, kentucky, among the states being hit tonight. >> reporter: these storms caused lots of damage along the way including at least two deaths. this is a photo shot inside a mostly collapsed amazon warehouse outside the st. louis area in edwardsville, illinois. lots of workers were trapped. you can see emergency crews trying to help those workers and assess the damage. right now, there is no information about injuries there but there is one person dead from damage in nearby defiance, missouri. at the amazon warehouse, family members are still waiting to hear word that their loved ones working inside survived. >> i talked to them about 8:00 tonight. a little before. i texted him and he was returning to the warehouse to drop his van off and i haven't heard from him since. >> reporter: in the town of monnette near jonesboro, arkansas, a roof collapsed killing one person. at leaf five others are injured. 20 people were trapped inswlid the roof came down. emergency res

in concord, sergio quintana nbc nbc bay area thinks. >> we are tracking a tragic story on the central coast. a rare deadly shark attack happened in moral bay at a beach known as the pits. now, you can see it on the map. it is about a 20-minute drive from san louis obispo right there. police say before 11:00, a boogie border was pulled out of the water after an apparent shark attack. unfortunately, they didn't survive. they are not releasing his name or age. the beach is still open but no one allowed in the water for the next 24 hours. now, fatal shark attacks are pretty rare in california. the last one actually happened in 2020 near the state beach off the santa cruz coast. there were two other notable attacks in the bay area this year. one in half moon bay. okay? and the other one was in bodega bay. the be victims of both of those attacks did survive. >>> well, it took only seconds that is what we learned about that flooding that kill add couple on peninsula. it happened early yesterday at an under pass. a public works employee actually saw it happen just after help organize people s

nbc bay area's ciara johnson outside city hall. she just spoke with the chief of police about the changes and the changes they've seen. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. the chief of police was optimistic about the results he has seen and given that beefed up security around the union square area. he has also mentioned the central station police area. that includes union square, north beach, and chinatown. the crime in that area is down significantly. almost 82% total, which is broken down into three categories which i'll get into over the span of 16 days compared to 16 previous days. the police department has broken down crime into three categories. assault, burglaries, as well as larceny and theft. according to the data provided by sfpd activity in all three categories from those neighborhoods fell. assaults are down 67% from 3-1. burglaries down 91% from 11-1. larceny and theft down 82% from 67 to 12 occurrences which brings total crime down by 82% which does include vehicle thefts and robberies. i had a chance to speak as i me

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live. we're talking about a booster mandate for health care workers here. >> reporter: right. we've been reporting this morning the governor announcing that people who work in places like the hospitals behind me here in pleasanton, health care workers here in the state of california, will have to get that third booster shot by february of next year. the governor also making an announcement this morning there will be more testing options for californians, especially students. now this is a live feed of the governor at a news conference taking place right now. this is from a testing and vaccination clinic in oakland where he is announcing new measures to counteract the rise of the highly contagious omicron variant. the governor announced that the state every day is testing our wastewater, and the latest results from the wastewater tests show that omicron makes up for more than 50% of the covid infections. there is a study from a stanford lab that shows that it found omicron in 71% of covid-po

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us outside of federal court in downtown san jose. any idea how long deliberations could last? >> legal experts say the jurors working in the federal courthouse behind me in downtown san jose could take several days to decide the fate of elizabeth holmes, the founder of theranos. the court tells us that jurors began their first full day of deliberations at around 8:30 this morning. scheduled to go to 4:00 this afternoon. will be back tomorrow and thursday off. wednesday and friday because of the holiday. now the jurors did deliberate for a short time after they received the case late friday afternoon. this was after both sides wrapped up their closing arguments. the 37-year-old founder of the blood testing startup theranos face 1s 1 counts of wire fraud and 20 years behind bars for allegedly lying to investors and patients about her company's ability to detect hundreds of possible diseases from a few drops of blood. in his closing argument, holmes' attorney kevin downing stressed the high standard of, quote, beyond a reasonable doubt.

. >>> this is nbc "nightly news" with lester holt. >> good evening. a verdict as we come on the air in the closely watched jussie smollett trial a chicago jury tonight finding the former "empire" actor guilty on five of six counts related to lying to police about being the victim of a hate-driven attack in 2019 the verdict coming on the second day of deliberations. rehema ellis has the breaking news for us. rehema >> reporter: lester, jussie smollett stood with his arms crossed and he was stoic as the jury read the verdict. as you point out, he was found guilty of five of six counts not guilty on a charge of reporting a false aggravated battery to police but it was nearly three years ago that he was facing six felony counts of reporting a fake, anti-gay and racist attack against himself and lying to police about it on the witness stand he had always insisted on his innocence saying there was no hoax, but the prosecution told jurors that he had orchestrated a hate crime, paying two brothers to stage the attack smollett now could face up to three years
