in a new nbc news poll, a majority of americans are giving the president low marks. nbc's steve kornacki joins us now to break down the numbers. >> well, frances and philip, one year into his presidency, joe biden in our new poll, approval rating of just 43%, a majority say they disapprove of the job the president is doing now, we can put this in some context. let's compare how biden is doing at the one year mark with how his recent predecessors were doing. how does he stack up he is a few points better than where donald trump was at this point, at the one year mark in our poll, trump was actually under a 40% approval rating. if you go back to barack obama a little bit further, biden is under where barack obama was obama was at 50% at the one year mark so biden is in between the two of them. and the concerning thing for democrats and for the biden white house certainly, both trump and obama had very rough midterm elections. and you look at that number for biden, it's right in the range where trump and obama were so didn't work out well for them in the midterms. a bit

that's according to an nbc news tally.e than 7 million of those cases are right here in california with about 76,000 new daily cases. now state health leaders confirmed more cases of that new omicron subvariant have been detected here in california. there are now 26 confirmed cases of ba.2 as it is called. they've been identified in santa clara, tulare, los angeles, orange and san diego counties. new research is showing the subvariant is one-and-a-half times more contagious than the original omicron variant, and it is already circulating in nearly half of the u.s. there is some good news. the cdc says there's no evidence it is any more severe than omicron, and the uk health agency says ba.2 doesn't appear to reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine. >>> the white house promised it would start shipping those free n95 masks as well, and we continue to follow the news of those n95 masks that are supposed to be distributed by the federal government. we checked in with some bay area pharmacies still waiting for their shipments.

nbc bay area did receive a copy of the email sent to oakland unified families last night. in it the district warns a teacher sickout could disrupt. ousc argues that kids could be in situations less covid safe if teachers don't show up. right now it's unknown how many teachers took part in the sickout in the district and which schools will feel that strain. what are the teachers in the district saying? we asked the teachers union for its take. it released a statement which said in part, this is not an official union action but we are urging districts and state leaders to listen to the urgent demand for better masks and more testing. and here in san francisco, sfsd saw a similar sickout on thursday. the bayuary's largest school district had 616 teachers call off. many of them were answering the call for a sickout to protest some -- what some see as a lack of covid safety on campus. so just to put that number into perspective on any given day, districtwide here in san francisco, 250 to 300 teachers could call out sick. the number yesterday was a little more than double what t

in washington, alice barr, nbc news. >> alice, thank you. that collapsed bridge in pennsylvania points to a huge problem all over this country, including right here in the bay area. our senior investigator, stephen stock has been covering our crumbling infrastructure for more than a decade now. how are we looking in california? >> a little better than pennsylvania, audrey. according to the american society of civil engineers, we in california are better off than pennsylvania which has a little more than 15% of their bridges that are classified by engineers as structurally deficient or problematic. here in california, only about 7% of our 26,000 bridges are classified as deficient or problematic. here in the bay area, that includes 266 problematic bridges that we found throughout our nine county regions. this is the most updated data available. santa clara county has most with 61 problematic bridges followed by alameda county with 56. contra costa has 47. sonoma, 30. san mateo county, 28. solano county with 24 followed by marin, 11. napa, 6.

nbc bay area's sharon katsuda joins us live. we've been waiting to hear what the chief has to say. >> yes, as you can see, this is one of the pictures they released in this news conference. this is the shooting that rocked the rose garden neighborhood. the carjacking shootout ended at park avenue and heading street. police say the suspect has been identified as robert seth carter in his 30s. was driving a stolen vehicle out of san jose. then attempted a carjacking in santa clara county. you can see some of the aerial photos they released at the news conference moments ago. and later he crashed into another car injuring two people. fortunately those people are okay but the stolen car went up in a ball of flames. the suspect fled that scene. police say he was armed. and four officers were involved in this shooting. there was a shootout. >> this was a traumatic incident for everyone involved. for the surviving family of mr. carter, for the involved officers who have families to get home to and for our community who witnessed the gu
