these are from our nbc affiliate there kprc. kprc is also reporting the fire is located in the sports bar portion of that hotel. we've seen several people, including firefighters, actually being put onto stretchers as they fight these flames. again, this is some breaking news just south of houston, flying high above a fire at a hotel. smoke blowing across southwest -- southwest texas right now, we're told. that is also having an effect on traffic. you can see the traffic slowing down at the bottom left-hand portion of your screen there. officials at this point say that the fire started sometime around noon at the southwest end -- southwest inn. that's the hotel. in the 6800 block of southwest freeway. it's near hornwood. again, kprc, our affiliate there, saying that this is a four-alarm fire. right now, you can actually see some stretchers in the highway there -- stretchers in the middle of the highway. tough to make out if we can actually see folks on those stretchers. again, before we went to these pictures, we did see a numbe

looking now at live pictures from a helicopter by nbc affiliate kfor.ut two miles in width. there is widespread damage, some reports from the oklahoma city police department, apparently of people trapped in buildings. we have seen pictures just in the past few minutes, maria, of a major blaze that appears to have broken out in what looks to me like some kind of commercial or warehouse building. there are also unconfirmed reports that there is damage particularly in southern portions of oklahoma city and as i mentioned, in the suburb of moore, there are lots of live power lines down. people are being advised to stay indoors, transportation and travel, basically very, very sort of dicey right now, maria. and there are also reports of gas leaks. we're going to continue to watch this, but obviously a major part of the center of the country is really under a tornado threat this afternoon and into tonight just as they have endured over the past 24 hours or so. if we get more, folks, we'll be back to you. >> thanks very much. we want to check in with brian nor

take a look at the pictures from our affiliate k nbc. the summit fire kicked out of control this afternoon. it's scorched more than 1500 acres. several homes are damaged, many more threatened as the blaze races across dry terrain with the wind to its back. with some 400 firefighters battling the flames, the fire is 0% contained. earlier today crews warned of these very conditions -- rising temperatures and falling humidity. this entire region is in an elevated fire danger. crews call the conditions a recipe for disaster. tonight firefighters are throwing every available resource at this fire, doing what they can to beat back the flames. they are losing the battle. this fire, brian, is burning out of control tonight. >> hot work digging fire breaks by hand. miguel almaguer tonight. thanks. >>> today is the first of may, a time we are supposed to be celebrating spring but believe it or not it is snowing in a big part of the country tonight in the rockies, the plains, the dakotas. they are setting records, in fact. as much as 8 to 12 inches

kindergarten through third grade sheltered in place with teachers and staff, according to our nbc affiliatewere found drowned at the school. the weather service said this is the second most powerful category of tornados with winds up to 200 miles per hour. but that could be reassessed higher. this is a time lapsed video you're looking at. one local called this a monster which tore up 22 miles over the better part of an hour. moore is used to tornados and mostly in may. while a major storm hit october 1998, may 3rd, 1999 was the big one. 300-mile-per-hour winds. 44 dead. one may 8th, 2003, may 10th, 2010, and now the deadliest. it is nearly to 100% capacity again. it has brought in mobile cell towers. at 10:00 a.m. eastern, the president will make a statement. there has been a state of emergency declared. it is hoped that will make it easier to get loans and federal resources to more. >> i know people have a lot of questions, people who aren't familiar with what happens to tornados like this. this is a situation where they are prepared. the school itself i believe had reinforced walls. some

reporter tracy clemmons is from our nbc affiliate.i which is 125 miles south of st. louis. these two trains collided into one another, one wof them derailed and they crashed into this overpass causing it to collapse. two cars were crossing the bridge when this happened and they were both caught in the collapse and there were five people in those cars all taken to the hospital and amazingly enough all five of them have been released and they are okay. also taken to the hospital were the two conductor of these trains. they were pulled from the wreckage by a sheriff's deputy here. they were also okay. just so nuts and bolts here. one of the trains was a union pacific train it was heading westbound carrying brand new cars as well as auto parts. you can see here some of those cars that i were carrying are hanging from the wreckage. the other train was a burlington northern train that was headed south toward arkansas and it was carrying scrap. now the cause has not been confirmed at this point but a source very close to the investigation te

according to kfor in oklahoma city, nbc news local affiliate, that search and rescue teams have shifted to a recovery mode with possibly two dozen fatalities there. fourth, fifth and sixth grade students were etc.escorted to a local church before the storm hit. today's tornado was likely an ef-5, the most severe, with wirnd speeds of more than 200 miles an hour. according to initial reports, today's tornado was three times more extensive that tore through the same area, moore, on may 3, 1999. that storm had the highest winds everybody recorded near the earth's senate. the path is 20 miles long, it's peak intensity right over moore, oklahoma. entire neighborhoods were destroyed. residents are sifting through debris listening for cries for help. there are at least as of right now ten confirmed fatalities with search and rescue obviously ongoing. oklahoma police say there's a continued risk from downed power lines and gas lines in the aftermath of the storm. the staging area for search and rescue has been set up by moore's warren theater. the university of oklahoma is welcoming displaced f

nbc's tracie potts joins us live from washington with a preview. good morning. >> good morning. the big picture here is that with al qaeda central organization essentially decimated, there are other threats from al qaeda affiliates, even homegrown terrorists inspired by al qaeda. that's what the president plans to address today and one of the tools in america's arsenal are the use of the unmanned drones. the president today will lay out in detail, we are told, justification for the legal use of these drones. and now in a new letter from the attorney general to congress for first time the administration is acknowledging that four americans had been killed since 2009 by these drone strikes that he says are legal although he told congress there's no plan to use them inside the united states. also today in that speech at the national defense university, president obama expected to talk about embassy security in light of four americans who died at the consulate in benghazi. he'll talk about beefing up security around the world and about what was a first term goal that the president has not yet been able to do, closing the military prison at guantanamo b bay. all of that as part of his speech on terrorism today. >> tr
