this has prompted many bay-area nurses to hold a day of action. nbcrea sierra -- cierra johnson are telling us what's going. >> reporter: they are hoping to bring a day of action on workplace safety as we continue in the front lines in this pandemic. that was over the week as the department of public health announced that hospital staff members who test positive and are simonton-free can continue working as well as workers exposed to the virus who are asymptomatic. they can return to work immediately without isolation or test willing. according to an explanation on the national united nurses website, the union explains they believe that sending nursed and other health care workers back to work while infected is dangerous. they continue by saying, quote, if we get sick works will be left to take care of our patients and community in the policy is set to remain in place through february 1st and is designed to keep many health care workers on the job at a time when hospitals are expecting more patients. for ucsf nurse we spoke with the recent decision is

and in a story that is seen only here on nbc bay area is that private medical providers don't seem to be doing their part. >> reporter: it's always non-stop here at the main testing site in santa clara county at the fairgrounds. they just keep coming and come. the fear now is that maybe not all health providers are carrying their own weight. the long line snakes around the fairgrounds parking lot daily. the testing here is relentless. just getting here is a challenge in itself. >> it was a little frustrating, but a week was the soonest appointment i could get. >> reporter: in fact, this was a message patients got trying to book an apointment with santa clara county. nothing available. >> extremely difficult. >> reporter: and the situation may help explain why the sites are so backed up. she's a kaiser center and should be getting her testing through that provider. >> we've resorted going to the county, to the fairgrounds, i went as far as morgan hill the other day just to get a test. >> the fear as many kaiser patients are choosing the county because their own provider isn't doing its

nbc bay area's sharon katsuda joins us live. we've been waiting to hear what the chief has to say. >> yes, as you can see, this is one of the pictures they released in this news conference. this is the shooting that rocked the rose garden neighborhood. the carjacking shootout ended at park avenue and heading street. police say the suspect has been identified as robert seth carter in his 30s. was driving a stolen vehicle out of san jose. then attempted a carjacking in santa clara county. you can see some of the aerial photos they released at the news conference moments ago. and later he crashed into another car injuring two people. fortunately those people are okay but the stolen car went up in a ball of flames. the suspect fled that scene. police say he was armed. and four officers were involved in this shooting. there was a shootout. >> this was a traumatic incident for everyone involved. for the surviving family of mr. carter, for the involved officers who have families to get home to and for our community who witnessed the gu

bay area news tonight. >>> welcome back to nbc bay area news tonight. a lot of parents waiting for this announcement. and it came. today the green light for boosters. covid boosters for 12 to 15-year-olds, and they're recommending those booster shots five months after your child's last vaccination. this is all an effort to better shield people from the omicron variant. you know that part of the story. the decision comes just as students begin returning to school from the holiday break. the philadelphia says data shows there are no new safety concerns with this age group getting a booster should. schools are repeating a plea here. please test your kids before sending them back to class. here's the problem. families want to test, but many pharmacies are simply out of those take-home tests. so what you're seeing here, many school districts like the orinda union district held drive-up clinics today to distribute those at-home tests to families. others like foster city elementary on the peninsula and the mount diablo district in contra costa county offered i
