bay area. >>> because of tonight's nascar race, we begin with that developing story nbc bay area has learned that the plane has took off from the airport has crashed in oregon killing the two people on board. the crash happened near the airport which is east of salem. nbc bay area's sergio contana is in the area with the latest development. >> reporter: an employee of the one of the local flight planning zools and service companies here told us that that plane, that crashed at the airport told me it's a small, single engine plane call. it's called an experimental plane. it has to be assembled on site. went down about a mile short of the runway at the mattress oregon airport. this is video of that crash site. according to emergency officials there. people saw a dark plume of smoke and then a small brush fire, then reports of a plane crash. according to to the local authorities in oregon, the pilot and the passenger did not survive that crash. the airport has become a popular spot for people to fly to watch the eclipse on monday. at the moment, we have not learned many details about the operato

how and why he fled to the bay area is among many questions at this hour. nbc bay area cheryl hurd at the federal courthouse in oakland to sort out ut the cross country manhunt. cheryl. >> >> reporter: raj the story is intriguing because the two suspects are prominent in respective communities. one of them giving himself up here at the federal courthouse in oakland. the other at the park station in san francisco. all of this bringing into an end a manhunt for two alleged killers. chicago police have been on the hundred for the two men. 42-year-old wyndham lathem and 56-year-old andrew warren lathem is a professor at medical school and warren a oxford university employee are the prime suspects in the murder of a young hair stylist from michigan. he was found stabbed to death last week in lathem's 10th floor apartment. chicago police say lathem was last seen leaving his apartment building shortly after the murder with warren who just arrived in the u.s. for the first time. police discovered the body after being called to the apartment for a welfare check. lathem
